Does anyone know how the new 5.7 round compares to the old 7.62x25 in penetration ability? I keep hearing all sorts of stories about how wonderful the 5.7 is but I also have heard the old 7.62 was king of the handgun world for punching through stuff.
Thanks!

PS, I think I have the 5.7x28 designation right, I mean the new Five seveN round.

But the Five-seveN is a semi-auto pistol, and also has a shorter barrel, further reducing velocity. It has BIG problems as a defensive gun, and there are several lawsuits from individual officers who had been issued Five-seveN's as duty weapons regarding these failures to stop.

Damn, don't they play Counter-Strike? Don't they know all they need to do is get a headshot from 40 yards away?!?!?!

Yes, yes, I jest..

Too shallow?? I've always thought the problem with 7.62x25 was it's excessive penetration in flesh. I seem to recall reading somewhere's that 7.62x25 fmj will penetrate some 60+" of ballistic gel, with only an icepick type wound channel.

Re 7.62x25 vs 5.7x28: I'll take the 7.62x25 anyday. The 5.7 is only chamberd in the P90 burpgun & the Five-seveN pistol...neither of which are readily available to civies & are rather fugly. 7.62x25 Tokarev/7.63 Mauser chambered guns & ammo are much easier to find.

Thanks for the info guys. It is about what I figured it would be. I got to handle a Five seveN and the round didn't impress me that much.
I have done some playing around with the 7.62x25 and have been quite impressed. Over 1600fps using the Hornady 95gr XTP (Troy, is the the HP you commented in?).
Thanks again!...
