Let's say a Ruger 10/22.  How far out can you have some plinking fun?  200 yards?  I want a small caliber rifle...either a .22 or .17.

What do you think?  Could you pop steel plates at 200 yards?

I was shooting my 10/22 HB at Lynnhaven outdoor at the 100yd line and I had to max out the elevation in my scope. Ammo played a big part. The subsonic stuff impacted alot lower than the CCI mags.
I think the .22 drops too much to shoot over 100yds with any accuracy, add that to the low weight of the round and you'd be better off with a .22 WMR.

Stock 10/22 with a Leupold Tactical 3-9x40mm.  Maxed out elevation.  Held a bit over. Was hitting 12"x12" steel plate at 200 yards.  With cheap 550 round Federal Bulk.  Every time i did my part, i hit the plate.

I regularly shoot my CZ 452 at 200m with peep sights; from a prone position. As long as there isn't too much in the way of crosswind, hits on objects the size of soccer ball are fairly easy. I've dropped dozens of crows at 150m or more.

My Savage 17HMR can keep 'em inside a 1" circle at 100 yards, even with its crappy trigger.

i can easily send pepsi cans flying at 100yds w/my 10/22 if i just put my crosshairs a tad above the top of the can.  i couldnt tell you exactly how far its dropping but im hitting what i aim at.


BTW i use federal target almost exclusively

with a 10/22T with a 4-12x40 bushnell i made plenty of hits on squirrel at 80 yards, using eley hollowpoints.

with my anschutz 1813 we occasionally shoot prone at 100 yards. with my iron sights i have to bring the sights up 100 clicks(1/8 per click) when i go from 50 to 100 yards, using eley tennex.

never tried over 100 yards with either.

I bought a marlin 17. 200.00.   scope, rings and trigger work will add as you choose. Shoots so much flatter than a 22lr. or mag, you may want to go this route shooting rimfire at 200. Calm winds will produce amazing feats from my marlin.

A shooting buddy and I have been plinking out to 200 yds. for several years.  I shoot a Remington 781 and the same CCI Mini Mags used for hunting.

The best group ever was 5 rd. 2.25 inches. We regularly shoot soda cans, sometimes several hits in a row.

Wind flags are mandatory. Near as we can figure, each full value mph of wind produces 2 inches of drift.

With the Mini Mags at 1270 fps, the come-up from 100 yds. is 16 to 17 minutes. Temperature change produces  noticable change in point of impact, not sure if its ammo temperature or air density. Probably both.

200 yards is all we have available at our range and this way we get play with wind a lot more than with the centerfires.
