I've seen them on ebay and gunbroker, plans and actual built ones, but it never says what and how they work exactly. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Its a device that allows some semi-auto AR's to fire automatically.  Note the rifles are not select-fire like M16s, with this device in place they are 'safe' or on 'auto'.

There are legal (registered) LLs out there - probably cost several thousand dollars.  Usually most people just ante up a bit more for the real deal or a DIAS (Drop in Auto-Sear) so they can have legal select-fire.

They do make a select fire kit for lightning links.

"In operation the take-down pin post acts as a fulcrum point. When the bolt carrier strikes the top of the links upright the lower end is rocked to the rear, moving the body of the link backward about 1/16 inch, releasing the hammer from under the disconnector hook. As long as the trigger is held back the rearward movement of the bolt carrier will cock the hammer under the disconnector hook. The forward movement of the carrier will strike the upright of the link just as the bolt locks in battery, releasing the hammer, and firing the weapon. I thougth a lightnign link was somethign on your roof to draw lightning to the ground.....
