I'm buying a Winchester Defender shotgun that comes with a removable Tru-Glo sight. Never used one of these sights before. Do they work OK, or is it just something I'll wind up removing and tossing in a drawer?

I put a set of tru glo sights on my 870 slug barrel. I was amazed at the light gathering ability. IMO fiber optic sights are not a gimmick, they work.

I have a Winchester 1300T with a tru-glo sight.  It is an awesome device.

I have Tru-Glo sights on my Remington 11-87 turkey shotgun. They definitely gather light when it is dim out. They are the same as the ones found on my bow, so I can vouch for their light-gathering capability. I have noticed that GREEN ones show up in low light better than RED ones though.
