$ 833 a pop with spare mags and holsters-um don't these pistols cost about $ 700 for civilians (of course maybe theirs are stainless with nightsights etc) I thought coppers got better deals than that.

Anyway more departments are switching to 45 and 40-one local cop claimed to me that the switch to 45 was for shooting dogs that drug dealers are using as guards as much as for shooting people. The funny thing is this department probably had nice .357 revolvers 10 years ago that would have done the job just as well/better but they weren't the cool thing to have anymore.

I'm still baffled that NY paid for it's conservation officers to switch from .357s to 40 glocks (while the state police carry 9mm).

The .45 isn't really up to black bear or moose either.  They should be using rifles for that stuff.

Still, under the conditions there, I'd want a .45 with FMJ ammo, but I have big ol' Baby Huey hands.  As you said, not everyone will be able to shoot that large of a handgun well.  They should probably adopt the .40Short&Weak for the folks that need a smaller grip, and the .45 for everyone else.
