I think I've been bitten by the bolt action bug.I've always concentrated on filling up my assault rifle collection so never paid that much attention to bolt guns.Well guess what...I've filled up my collection so it's time to start thinking of a new toy.

I want to use this as a tactical rifle along with deer hunting.I will get it in 308.

I humbly ask the bolt action Gods to have mercy on this mere mortal and point him in the right direction.I need advice on LTR or PSS,hinged floorplate,detachable mag,20" or 26" barrel etc etc etc.  

JESUS CHRIST!......GET a model 7 in 7-08....that`s about the best remington deer gun there is for all day hunting and whatever.......if you have to get a long gun......there are others who make it in that caliber....................

The reason I want to get a 308 is I want to keep my ammo requirements very simple and easily acquired.That's why all my rifles are 22LR,223 and 308.For our little Florida deer 308 is more than sufficient.

Get a Remington Model 700 LTR in .308.  Smaller and lighter than a full-size 700.  About the size of a Model 7 but the LTR has accuracy to burn.  Deer will quiver at the sound of your name.  And the tactical folks will have to spend money and work to beat it.

Arock is right, the LTR is the way to go.  I have worked on a few of these and they are great right out of the box.

Glass bed the action, adjust the trigger and you have a .5 MOA rifle almost certainly.

Great deer rifle as well as its intended tactical uses.

I'll second that notion.  Except I'd get the Model 7 in .308 and probably fit it with a 1" Pachmyer Deccelerator recoil pad.  You could finish it with a matte black teflon coat and it would be VERY impervious to the elements.  I see you are in FL...

Otherwise, I'd go with a 20" hinged floorplate LTR.

I've had to fiddle with the trigger guard to get my detachable mags to work in my PSS.  I have a PSS that I chopped down to 20" and threaded.  It's good as a bench gun, but I'd recommend the LTR or M7 for a "real" hunting gun.

Do you know dealers price on a LTR?

Two guns come to mind:

1.  700 LTR
2.  Model 7

The LTR would be a great choice for a "Tactical Hunter".  
You could skip the extra heavy duty hardware to mount on it, i.e., the 30mm/$2000/21oz. Leupold scope in the 2lb.+/$300 Badger Ordnance/'other name brand' base and rings; and, of course, the ubiquitous Harris bipod.

I'm NOT knocking these "best of the best" items; I'm merely pointing out that they are not needed in a heavy stocked/heavy barreled short carry rifle.

On the other hand, I've got a project in mind for next year for a heavy bbl. Model 7; the antithesis of what the rifle is supposed to be.
Calibers of choice are the 7mm-08 and the .308, with the .22-250 as a possible.

If you just want a nice deer hunting rifle, the Model 7 in .308 would be a good start.

If you want a serious Tactical rifle, I'd go BIG and get the 700PSS in .308.

I was hot for it but the gun I needed to sell didn't.
HS prec. Does make a Varmint stock for the Model 7.
I understand the Common ammo theory BUT you will not be using the same load in a dedicated tactical bolt gun as say a FAL. I use the 7-08 with 168 gr.SMK's and I am working with a pair of 260's now.

I think that sounds like a wonderful idea.I'm still about 2 mths away from saving up enough lunch money but I'm just trying to get my ducks lined up.

I personally like the 7-08. I have a 700 in the 7-08 & it is a hell of a deer round. Like others have said you will need special ammo for your rifle anyhow. If not the 7-08 I think I would go with the LTR. I kinda drool over one myself...  :)

Lift weights that way you can carry a heavier rifle which is more accurate.
