I was wondering if anyone knew what the most expensive is for normal calibers, excluding "elephant" guns? I'm guessing .458 or .460 would be tops but perhaps ammo for obsolete calibers would be tops?

Handguns would probably be the new .460 Ruger or maybe .454 Casull?

Is biggest always the most expensive?

This probably falls outside your guidelines but .50BMG Mk211 Mod 0 Raufoss rounds go for $35-$50 apiece.  It's the current armor-piercing incendiary that is debatably legal to possess and highly sought after.

And prior to getting reloading dies for a .458 Lott, Speer Grand Slam Penetrator ammo from Superior cost $135 for a box of 20.

Whatever it is, it will probably be Made in England, carry the name "Rigby",and/or "Express", and be intended for use in firearms costing as much as a nice home..

And will probably do the same job as a .45-70..

Yeah, those EtronX rounds are expensive!  I've also seen some of the Weatherby brand ammo at my local shop for $150-$225 per box of 20.  Not sure which calibers were which.

I can tell you from experience though that I get pissed just paying $46+ per box (20) for .338 Rem Ultra Mag!

Then again, I get all anxious paying $22 for boxes of Fed Gold Medal Match .308, too...  Guess I'm just cheap, anything over $5-$10 gets me all guilty feeling!

Actually, there may be some gold in there.  A good conductor.  Not sure if there is gold in the rifle either.  Interesting, although I really doubt it.
