What's the difference between a Mossberg 500 & 590?  They both seem popular...  But, nothing on the Mossberg site explains the difference between the two.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

Mike

I believe the 590 A1 has a heavier barrel and the trigger guard is steel instead of plastic.

the 500 has an 8 shot max capacity and you have to remove the mag tube to clean it or replace the mag spring.

the 590 has 9 shot max capacity and the end cap unscrews for cleaning or replacing the mag spring.

the 590 A1 has a metal triger guard.

If I were choosing a shotgun for combat, probably would be the 590A1 with a SpeedFeed Stock AND a sidesaddle.....

The 590 generally has an evil bayonet lug!
Also normally the 500 is blued, and the 590 is parkerized.

The 590 is used by the Marines. (Takes the M9 bayonet, IIRC)

Does anyone know how the military attaches a sling to a 590?  If it is put on the mag cap a bayonet will not fit.

The 590A1 has a mount on the stock, and a drilled and tapped hole in the bottom of the bayo lug for a mount to be installed.

Pretty sweet.  I love mine!  I do want a side saddle for it, but I'm not sure where to buy one, no one here in Maine seems to carry them.

The 590A1 is the ultimate in evil shotguns.  Practical and tactical.

Do all of the 590's have a bayonet lug, or just the 590A1's?  The Mossberg site wasn't clear on that.z

Do you think that the pistol grip speedfreed stock which is for the 500/590 will fit the 590A1?

Not sure. Should be probably the same receiver back there....

Scott

P.S. I missed one at a gun show already set up that way for $250 for want of the proper engravings of U.S. presidents.....

Hello, all!

Again, THANK YOU for the information!  I'm looking at making an AOW shotgun in the future, but I just don't know if I want a 500, 590, or 590A as the receiver.  I've found a stock that I like that's specifically for the 500/590.  The problem is that some say it won't work on the 590A, and others say that it will.

Humm.  Wish I could get through to mossberg.....

Thanks again,

Mike
