What do you think about accuracy and reliability of sig vs ar15 rifles ?

Personally, I far prefer the Sigs.

I might point out that the M4 is 14.5" and the Sig 551 is closer to 16".

Despite this, I love my AR too!

No, the 551 has a 14.5 barrel (the 551 long barrel version LB HAS A 16").

How does the Robinson M-96 stack-up against the Sig 551?

I think an American company should make a Sig 550 series copy for domestic sales, that would be cool.

(And by cool, I mean totally sweet )

Not exactly.

You're talking about the Sig 551-1P (1st Polizei variant).  The 1P is a law enforcement design and has a 363mm (about 14.25") barrel.  The Sig 551-SWAT has the same dimensions (but no one buys it).

There is also the Sig 551 SP (which was modified slightly to meet NATO specifications and is generally the version sold for export but is otherwise indistinct from the 551 LB unless you get the police version of the 551 SP).

You are correct about the 551 LB designation but the terms "Sig 551" and "Sig 551 LB" are interchangeable.  (No one uses the LB designation except when ordering the weapon- this is because it is marketed to the general public more widely than to law enforcement, which is pitched on the 551 SWAT, and the 552).  There are actually two barrels for the Sig 551 with different twists.  Both are right around 16".

Also, be careful because not all countries measure barrel length from the same starting point.  :)

[Edited to change the length bit)

Sig 551 16" barrel = yes.
(Not that remembered but I did look it up.  Only about $10,000 separates me from having one NIB !)

We get the 550 style up here.

The M4 will probably weigh less, but the SIG has a folding stock, so overall lenght would be less. A stock SIG has better accuracy and a better trigger then a stock AR. Also the SIG would be more reliable since its gas piston is very close to that of an AK. In nato test the 550 came in first and the AR came in second.

The only thing between me and the gun pictured below is about $1900 USD:

I'm not a huge fan of 1 in 10 inch twists.  Doesn't seem spin enough for me.  Go for the 1 in 7 (550-2 or 551-2).  Barrel wear will eventually be a problem because you will never want to fire anything else.  Replacement parts are hard in the U.S. but finding a 551 in the United States will be harder.  There were less than 60 legally imported before the ban.  Make SURE to check SNs as a good number were illegally smuggled in from Canada in the late 1990s.

I've never shot the M-96.

I can tell you that I've fired around 20 different types of weapons in 5.56 and the Sig is my favorite 5.56 rifle bar none.

Delta thought enough about the 550 series to order around 500 of them from SIG.

G36 series looks enticing (though unobtanium), too. Rumor is that at H&K, Germany, there's a G36 w/100K+ rounds through it & still going; has never been cleaned or serviced.

My dealer let me handle a full-size variant. Would sure love to have 2 or 3 in my toybox. [>(]
