Why were there M-16A1s in the movie if it takes place in 1965?  They should have been armed with M-16s or M-14s.

M16A1s were correct for the time and unit. Note that the version of the M16A1 was correct as well (no trapdoor, chrome bolt carriers, three prong flash hiders, etc.). According to an article in SAR, they were built especially for the movie.
