Looks like there might be some serious fighting there soon...according to MSN, India has massed a MILLION troops on the Pakistani border...So what kinds of guns will be in this fight? Do the Indians still rely on the 7.62 FAL, or have they gone micro caliber? The Paks I've seen on the news have G-3's, AK's and MG-42's.

Yes, I think the Indians do mainly still employ the FAL as their main combat rifle. But I also think they have a smattering of AR's and other types as well. I think I can recall seeing them using a WWII vintage .303 machine gun not long ago during the last flare up. Both sides seem to use whatever they have on hand and nothing appears to be "standard". If the shooting starts I imagine there will even be a few bolt guns get in on the action from both sides.

i recently read they use a mix of FAL, AK and AR. i'd also bet they've got a bunch of SMLE's stashed somewhere.

India does still use their home-grown non-licensed FAL in some units, but for front line units they use a home-grown knock-off of the East German AK for which they never paid the former EG gov't (see Ezell's new Kalashnikov book), and also use a home-grown Galil-looking AK in .22 caliber something, I think 5.45 but I cannot recall.

That INSAS looks like it might actually be a pretty good rifle, aside from the magazine.  I like the aperture sights.

Stormbringer -- THANK YOU!  That's what I was trying to recall and describe.  It does look Galil-ish with the PG and the front gas tube / handguard arrangement.

What? WOOD stocks... and PLASTIC magazines? And those mags look like 20- or 25- rounders at best! I wonder if the Indians are still in the stone age (like their Brit mentors) and don't think the individual soldier should have a full-auto weapon...

Psssst....Stormsurge...

Did'nt the US army go to 3 round burst a while ago???

Yes, and they have realized that burst is a mistake...Not that I am saying the Army is up to speed...Being a former Marine, we always regarded our larger sister service as a bunch of ill-trained bufoons..

As a former private in the US Army I think 'buffoons' should only apply to officers !

Being a former Marine, I'm sure you are aware that the A2 rifle with its burst instead of auto was not an Army design.

I don't think India has a "standard" issue rifle.
