I just got my PSS last weekend and now the only thing I need is a scope. I want a scope that can go up to 5, 6 hundred yards, that can see the target very clear and in detail. I have about 800 bucks to burn, so any suggestions?

The leupold vari XIII long range tactical scopes are great.

Ditto schapman43, Leupold Vari X III w/ Mil-Dots and turrets. Precision rifles need precision optics to realize their full potential.

What Schapman and Wilson said.  You can perhaps pay more money for ever so incrementally improved specifications, but the Leupolds have an unmatched track record.  There are a few other scopes I would like to try but my choice for a mission critical piece of glass is Leupold.

GIbrat,

Are those 3.5-10x Vari-X III's you have pictured the same except for the target knob?  I'm thinking of sending my Tactical 3.5-10x Vari-X III back to Leupold for the new Mil-Dot2 cross hairs, what do you think of them?  I also wanted to get the M1 or M3 target turrets on them, what are pros and cons of each style?

Thanks,

Chris

I have ovals, IMHO - round would be easier to divide up. However,YMMV.

M1 is 1/4 MOA clicks.

M3 is a BDC

Cams a great if they are calibrated to YOUR ammo. If you want a Cam, a blank turret that you have engraved for you would be best - IMHO.

*I think* M3s are 1/2 MOA. Which mean not a precise, however it also means fewer clicks to get to a longer distance (ie - less chance of messing up the count)

Better confim that last part though.

Good luck

FirearmTom1,

Yeah, that's the the one I'm talking about.  I thought Premier was part of Leupold.  Did you get this done on yours?  IF so how do you like the gen2 Mil-Dots?

Later!

I have a 700P with a Vari-X III M3.  The increments are 1 moa for elevation, 1/2 moa for windage.  I like the scope, but it is my first real scope, so I really can't compare.  Try

www.snipercountry.com/inreview.htm

for some good optics reviews.  Have heard good things about Nikon scopes also.  If you spend that much on a scope, consider buying a good one piece base and rings (like Badger Ordnance, which run $150 or so).

Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20 Long Range Target on my PSS .308

22 cal holes can be seen clearly at 300 yards through this scope

Only thing I have left to do is upgrade to Badger rings and bases

I think I paid around $700.00 each.
I have never tried it out that far, but I am sure with the increase in magnification to 10x and adjusting the side focus you should be able to see a long distance.

I think all your questions have been answered by other members....you can't go wrong with either scope..it just depends on what different bells and whistles you want.

I use the 5.56/.223 cam on my Varminter. The cam is calibrated to 55 grn.. The one for my M1A is calibrated for a 168 grn.

Troy,I lust for a 5R barrel.
My P has a Leupy 4.5X14 M1
My PSS has a Tasco SS 10X
M21 has the Unertl 10X.
I actually can't tell any difference optically.

I was checking leopold's web site and saw Vari-X III 6.5-20X 50mm Matte. Does this have a longer range then the 3.5-10x VARI-XIII?

Some folks would say the 6.5-20x is too much scope for a .308.  I see them frequently on .50BMG precision rifles.  I say use what you want.   The 3.5-10x is a pretty good fit for cartridge.  So is the 4.5-14x.  Depends on the job you want to do.  It still amazes me how some experienced marksmen get better scores with lower power scopes.  My LTR has detachable mounts for a selection of glass.

Yes, hightly recommended. I have this scope (Leupold p/n: 52199) w/Mil-Dot reticle.

It is the clearest scope i've seen through. Worth every cent I paid for it AND THEN SOME.

j00e, I have a new Leupold Mk4 M1 16x40, duplex reticle, side focus scope with all the accesories for sale.  The scope was removed from the box, but never mounted.  Send me an email if you're interested before I put it up for auction (it's in your price range).

This one is a 1/4 moa dot.  I bought it with the rifle.

I am going to change it.

Leupold 8.5 x 25 x 50 long range on a "Harris Custom" 338 Lapua
