Question for the experts;

What is the best twist rate for a 11.5 with 5.5 flash hider? I have been told that 1:9 is not the optumum for this barrel. It would seem to me that a higher twist rate would stabalize the bullet more but I could be wrong.

So what will it be? 1:9 or 1:7?

Thanks

All the older 11.5/5.5 would have 1:12 twists. New production has 1:9 twist.

At a barrel length of 11.5" you don't need to change the twist rate for any reason. Go with the 1:9 for use of a wide range of rounds.

I've never heard of a 5.5 twist rate for an AR. Doesn't mean there isn't one but I've never heard of it.

If you're determined to get a relatively incompetent barrel length I agree with "Forest" on the 1:9 twist.

Think he means an 11.5 inch barrel with a 5.5 inch flash hider/brake. Fastest twist we shoot is 1:6.5 from a Krieger-barreled .223 bolt gun.

90 grn JLK VLD's. And we're looking for some 100 grn Powell River Labs composition tungsten bullets. They do cut the wind.

I dont think you can get that set up in anything other than a 1/9". I think only BM, Oly, and DPMS make that configuration. May check with Oly but I think your stuck with a 1/9" unless you cut down a 1/7" Hbar or an A1 profile 1/12" barrel or have a custom barrel made.

I have one from "Harris Barrel Works" in Phoenix, Arizona. It has a 1/9 twist.

OK,

1:9 is pretty much it I take it. Let me ask you this.

For those who have this setup, do you like it? or if you had to do it again would you get the longer barrel. I know this has been debated over and over and the generel concenses is that its basically a waste (ballistically).

So what would a good reason be to get one? any other factors besides looking cool?

Go with a 16" 1:9 barrel and add a slip over flash suppressor for the CAR15 look. Unless it is just a fun gun for plinking, I don't think I would want to go into harms way with an 11.5 barrel, either way you still have to have a total of 16" unless your building a class 3 upper.

It is a fun pre-ban config. If it is your only AR, I would go with something else.

I see the point, since you have to put a 5.5 hider on it, it doesnt make any sense to get a 11.5. Better off with a 16 inch to get the most out of it ballistically, since they are bothe the same length. Am I right?

So why would anyone want a CLass 3 weapon then with a 11.5 barrel? From what Ive read its only effective to about 50yds or less. After that the bullet looses its kenetic engergy. Even the Army has 14.5 barrels. Is it really that much more manuverable?
