I am getting kind of bored hauling the old bolt action around every hunting season, and have been thinking of using a military semi-auto.  Which rifle would be best?

My shots tend to be long, so it needs good (MOA) accuracy.

I like the M1A because it will get less dirty looks from the "sportsmen," but from what I understand it is a poor platform for optics and it is difficult to maintain great accuracy.

Is the AR-10 the best choice?  Besides good accuracy and compatabiliy with optics, it is appealing that they might be coming out with a 300 short mag upper.

A Garand!  I really want to get a nice Garand, and get proficient enough with the sights to hunt deer with the old -06 and iron sights.  Not sure about optics options for it though.

Well, how long is long?  And what are you hunting for squirrel or deer?

If it's varmints, the the AR-15 is a great platform.

I'm kind of assuming by your comments about the M1A and AR-10 that it is more likely medium sized game.  I think a good quality FAL with a quality scope mount would be an option or maybe an M1A scout with the forward mounted optics (both depending on distance).

People hunt squirrels?

What is the trajectory like?  Where can I get one, and how much does it cost?

The problem with using military semi-autos for hunting is most aren't really set up for optics and with possible exception of an AR 10 you looking at a pretty heavy rig.  An M1A with scope should easily top ten pounds, more if you use medium or heavy barrel. FAL and H & K won't be much if any lighter. And a 400 yard shot with a 308 on large deer or elk sounds like the edge of the envelope.

PSG-1? Thats nuts man, theres a reason why recon snipers dont use that, cause its a big heavy bulky bastard. I say its only good for target shooting. For hunting? Try a springfield m1a, they're great weapons, and depending on the model you can pull off sub-moa. A little pricey, but you also get the punch you need from the .308. Easy for follow up shots if you screw up like i do. =D

Well That takes it.  A .458 SOCOM on an AR15 lower is as good as it gets.  I have used one and loved it.  .458 to the flesh it won't go any farther then that...

I second that.  When I get my M1, it will be what I use for hunting.  I don't hunt much, and figure the only things I'll ever hunt will be deer, and hogs.  The .30-06 round will be adequate for both!

I don't think that 458 is going to have the range I am looking for.  That is a pretty good idea though for shorter range hunting.

Somewhere on the net I saw where there is a company modifying Garands to fire .338 Win Mag.

How do you mount a scope on a Garand?

I think the .308 win would be marginal at 400 yards on Elk.  Even 30-06 could be questionable.  If you get an elk, you're going to pack out the elk AND the Garand?  Ouch!

I think I'd stick to a bolt gun in 30-06 or magnum.  If that bores you, try archery or handgun.

I will take a shot out to 300 with a load of Barnes X over 35.2gr of WIn 296 all day long. There is plenty of energy to smoke whatever you are shooting at in N America with that!! Dead on at 30 yards puts you 3" high at 100 yards 4"low at 200 yards and at 300 you are ~26" low, bring a range finder and a ballistics chart and have a BIG time!!!  Hell, you still have over 1100 ft pounds of energy at 300 yards!!!

Get an M1A Scout, that is what I use.

Go with a DSA SA58 FAL rifle in 308.win. A nice 1 M.O.A FAL. I dont really think it can shoot 1 M.O.A more like 2 or 3 M.O.A.

When I was younger, I hunted with an HK91.

I don't hunt any more, but if I were going to go again, I'd take my AR-10.
