Actually it is the Hague Convention which required the use of FMJ rounds by signatory nations. The US is NOT a signatory nation but abides by it anyway. (I never could figure out why CIVILIAN gun owners were in such a tizzy about abiding by the rules of warfare and using only FMJ's, since such rules do NOT apply to them.) Yes. Hollow point or Hunting Ammo gives better performance. Probably the BEST short range performance is given by Hornady VMAX 40 grain ammo for .223. |

Have you read the FAQ and the recent threads about 5.56mm ballistics in the Ammo forum?
40gr V-Max is NOT a good choice for defense vs. humans (now, if rodents are attacking you...). This round will fragment immediately and make a very shallow wound, as it's designed for 2-5 pound animals, not 120-200 pound animals. Every ammo/gun combination is a series of compromises. Some combinations are better at shorter ranges than othes, and different combinations are better at longer ranges than others. There's no single "does everything the best" round, or we'd all be using it. Good recommendations are: M193 (FMJ, 55gr) Winchester PowerPoint 64gr Hornady V-Max 60gr M855 (FMJ, 62gr) -Troy |
