S.U.R. has been around for a while. I don't know that anyone can accurately attribute to one person though someone had to come up with it. There is probably some debate as to who used it first. I saw it for the first time on this board and see it used almost exclusively on this board so I can only conclude that it was an ar15.com'er that came up with it. It's a fitting term and I find myself using it now and then.

It is however important to distinguish between a semi automatic assault rifle " preban " and a sport Utility Rifle " postban ". I personally sold all my assault rifles at price peak, I now own only SURs.

Unless your prebans had a selector switch that indicated 'safe', 'semi', and/or 'burst' and 'auto', you did not own an assault rifle. They were just preban SURs. There is no such thing as a 'semi automatic assault rifle', no matter what Bill Clinton says. This 'distinguish between' sounds like something out of Diane Feinstein's mouth.

I prefer the term "RESCUE RIFLE".

After all, you would use it to rescue yourself or others from peril, wouldn't you?
