also, what would a rifle like this be worth? it is in excellent shape for its age, and looks to be in about 90-95% condition. Also, the collapsible stock looks newer, has a glossy finish, and is 2-position.
The rifle is a buddy's, and I want him to sell it to me- trying to figure out how much the rifle is worth. |

I have a 1978 vintage Colt SP-1. My barrel's twist rate is 1-9 but I suspect that the barrel has been changed. It is probably worth between $1,300 to $1,500.

Twist for SP1s is 1/12- I just sold an SP1 Car in 96% and struggled to get $1425-

To check it take a cleaning rod, put a patch on it an insert it into the bore. Mark the top of the rod at the handel with a small scratch and mark a lateral scratch at the back of the upper. Push the rod in until it goes around and the scratch at the handel comes back up on top. Mark another lateral scratch. Measure the distance between scratches.

If it is the original Colt barrel it will be 1in12. The barrel should be marked C MP CHROME BORE.

1:12 as the rifle was designed to shoot 55grn bullets. (And ArmaLite originally designed the 5.56mm cartridge with the 55grn bullet to shoot in 1:14 and 1:12 twist barrels.) My local FFL has about a 97% SP-1 (Rifle not carbine) that can be bought for about $1250.00 |
