I am curious to see what kind of stencils have been used to make custom designs on rifles. I am making opposing/matched builds to which I will be adding unique paint designs. I have not been able to find the exact design that I want, so the thought I have now is to get some kind of adhesive stencil paper and cut my own designs, then affix them to the rifles and paint over. Then the stencils will be removed to leave the designs that I wanted.
Portions of the design will be lettering, so that should be fairly easy (stickers, craft supply, etc from Wal-Mart). Again, however, it is the more custom designs that I need to figure out. So what have you used, or seen used, to prepare a design to put on the rifle during painting?

P.S., any Warlords 3: Darklords Rising fans? Think Sirian v Bane.

A die cutter and Avery yellow vinyl is the best but high cost. If this is a rattlecan job I'd suggest using a piece of wax paper and wide blue tape. You apply the tape to the wax paper in strips so you wind up with essentially a sheet of blue tape with a wax paper backer. Now you can feed this into your printer. Find an image you like, print it to the sheet, cut out the image with a razor blade and ta da you have now turned yourself into a die cutter.
Post pics when your done.

As mentioned, none of the vendors located had a suitable blank sheet or the exact design I am seeking.
I appreciate the tips, I will try a few things over the remainder of the spring and try to post a work in progress soon.

I've used adhesive label paper in the past. It works well.

This is work in progress with stickers I was able to locate at Wal-Mart. So far, the painter's tape idea has not worked, but I will have a mock up to post soon. I think.
Elements of the distressed look are intentional, others will be worked over and redone.... when I have time.

I've used sheets of wax paper with blue painters tape on both sides. I used a razor to cut out the shapes I wanted, once they were cut just peel off the tape like a sticker and apply it to the rifle.
