RIT dye only produces the actual dye color if you start with plastic that is white in color.  Anything else will result in some weird color.  The exception is black.  You can make any color base plastic black in color with enough time in hot water.

Does the dye penetrate all the way through? Just the surface? What happens when it scratches?

It penetrates a lil i had to actually cut into a piece

There's a long running thread in the magazine forum about dying Magpul FDE mags different colors. Some users have gotten some pretty nice looking color mixtures going.

I did this around 2 years ago; I think we have an old thread somewhere about dyeing polymer.

I wanted earthy tones and not just the regularly available greens, black and fde. This is the result of the liquid brown dye on FDE parts. The pic makes it look a little more red than it is. RIT also comes in powder form.

The magazine was done with masking tape. First I masked off the parts I wanted to stay fde. Dipped it in green (powder) for 30 seconds at a time (water was warm with a little vapor coming off, but not a rolling boil).  Then I masked off the areas that were to stay green and dipped it in the brown.

Some folks around here have done some amazing work with rit dye and masking.
