I use my sentinels so often that I can't justify taking out the batteries. I'm probably out with 'em every night, along with my SBR with a dbal. So the batteries stay in those guys.

I remove it. I can't afford to replace the unit (or at least I don't want to spend the $)
I pull the batteries out of mine in the guns I don't use regularly.
See, that's my deal. I'll be using mine about once or twice a week, so I'm not sure if I really need to be pulling the battery out or if it'll be okay leaving it in all the time since it's getting used every couple/few days.
You are in the same boat as me. Leave them in. Just ensure they are lithium batteries. You could also do what I do, and have spares in a grip core, if you are willing to make that investment.
Yeah, I'm not worried about the battery life by leaving it installed, I'm more interested in why Steiner says not to leave the battery in it while not in use.

Is it just because the device will drain the battery quickly, or is it because it may cause some kind of damage to the DBAL? I could care less how often I need to replace the battery, I just don't want it to damage it in some way if I do end up leaving it installed 24/7. BTW, I use nothing but Streamlight or Surefire branded lithium CR123 batteries. Only exception is I did install the Rayovac that was supplied with the unit.

It seems unlikely that Steiner says to remove the battery when not in use because they're worried it could damage the device, but anything's possible, I guess. I don't remove the batteries from any of my weapon mounted devices when I'm not using them. Trijicon's, Aimpoint's, Surefire's, etc., all have batteries in them at all times and I've never seen this cause any problems or damage, except in rare instances where I've seen guys that used el cheapo Chinese batteries that overheated and exploded or leaked and caused corrosion or some odd circumstance like that. I can't imagine that would be an issue when using high quality batteries like the Streamlight's/Surefire's that I use.

I should contact LDI and inquire about their reasoning behind this recommendation, but I have a feeling I'll end up with some kind of generic response. Anyone else with further input please chime in.

Conversely:
I accidentally left the DBAL on my routine-use carbine, and the battery was dead when I went to use it.

Had I removed the battery, it would have just been a mistake. Not a $1.25 mistake.

I always figured this was the case, a cover-your-ass type statement in all product manuals/warranties.

True, but again, I'm not really concerned with battery life. The only thing that would have me removing and reinstalling the battery with each use would be the possibility of some type of damage to the device from leaving it installed. I buy 123's in bulk and at cost, so lifespan is pretty much a non-consideration for me. Even at an extreme of going through one or two batteries a month really isn't anything to mention considering they're less than $1/per.

Hope you keep spares on you, or you'll be laserless when your battery goes dead when you need it.

Obviously damage could occur because even lithiums can "leak" but it really rare.

They say it because of the battery drain issue.

That's what I assumed, but I wanted to check with more experienced users to be sure. Doesn't hurt to ask. Glad it's only the battery life issue.

Yup. I've been wanting one bad for the last couple months, but didn't feel like spending almost $900 on a new tan/green visible model and really didn't feel like spending $650 or so on a couple of the beat to shit used ones I came across in the configuration I wanted. I jumped on the deal for $705 as soon as I opened the email from DSG. This came right after spending way too much on a like new tan Surefire Scout the previous week, but it is what it is.

Also ordered the LEAF sight at the same time. Ordered both last Friday around dinner time and had them both delivered on Wednesday morning. I'm digging both pieces so far. The i2 really has a ridiculously impressive range on the green visible laser, especially on the high setting. The furthest I can see in a straight line from my front porch is about 3/8 of a mile and that's just over the advertised visible range of 750 meters or 2,461 feet. The i2 will spit it's beam that distance with no problem, so I know it'll reach 1/2 mile. One of these nights when its pitch black out I'll take it somewhere that I can see much further and find it's maximum range. Its really impressive.

The outer shell of the battery is also a sacrificial electrode. It is consumed during discharge so the seals have difficulty maintaining integrity when the battery is discharged. If a device drains the battery during non-use then the device is at jeopardy because the seals of the battery have been weakened.

You don't have to remove the battery, just turn the rotating switch to "off".  The DBAL will drain the battery if left in any other switch position.  I've experienced this, as have a number of other users.

This is what I've been doing since I got mine. Just turn it off when I'm done, but this seems like the obvious thing to do. If I own an electronic device that has an off switch I use it.

Replaced the Surefire SR07 and Steiner tape switch with the SR-D-IT switch.

Much better having control of both light and laser with one switch versus two individual switches or one switch for the light and manually operating the DBAL via the push button on top.

Also cleaned the front of the gun up some by removing the front MBUS Pro and using the LEAF sight mounted on the i2. Also removes a negligible amount of weight off the front.

Still need to get out and zero the DBAL.

Although, I really like the SR-D-IT, I miss having a constant on option for the light. This gun is used around my place at night and constant on was nice for searching and when navigating through wooded areas. I'm considering trying out a TAPS switch. I believe the PRO model is programmable for constant/momentary light functions.

If anyone's looking for a deal on a DBAL I2 or D2, I just got another email from DSG Arms. They're on sale again.

$699 for the tan I2 with green visible laser, and $999 for the black D2 with green visible laser. Both are free shipping, too.

Smoking deal on a new piece. I just bought an I2 about a month or so ago through them for the same price.

At that price, the d2 simply cannot be beat unless you're working in a highly dynamic area and situation where people are shooting back and you need to move from very short range to long range quickly.
