I'm new to the C&R rifle world, having started out with Russian M44s and recently a Enfield No.4, MK1.

What do you recommend for a "Top 5" C&R rifles to own? (Within reason cost wise. Say, $400 and under.)

Collectors or shooters? Pretty much different lists.

M44 M38 M91 (or my favorite the Finn M-39

Enfield No 1 or No. 4

M48 Yugo mauser

59/66 Yugo SKS

Turk or Czech 8mm Mauser

Well, everyone will have different opinions, and the price cap really puts a damper on the list. Otherwise I would be including things like the MP44, Thompson, BAR, etc. So, $400 or less, let me think...
Here's my ideas (excluding the M-N and Enfield as you have an example of each, but they are both very addicting):
1. M1 Garand--Love mine to death, just need more than one! Go CMP, and soon
2. M1 Carbine--Would love to get my hands on one, but they run about $450 and up; may just have to wait until my parents are in the ground to get my grandfather's
3. K31--Never owned/fired one, but they seem way cool, and everyone says they are uber-accurate.
4. Nice Mauser of some country and caliber. RC K98s are really cool, I like mine a lot. Swede Mauser would also be a nice choice, or (I utter the blasphemy) an 03 Springfield, since it is a very well executed copy/development of the Mauser design
5. And last but not least, a Krag. Preferrably a non-molested one, and if you were very lucky, a Norwegian in 6.5 Swede. I still kick myself for passing up on one 7 or 8 yrs ago. It was intact, minus sights and stock. I think the barrel may have been cut, but it was only $225, and I have never seen another one in person in my entire life. So, here's my brief list, with my suggestions.

German K98k

M1 carbine USGI

M1917 US Enfield

M1903 Springfield

And 3 of these shoot the same round (30-06)

If you leave out the Swiss K31 you must be insane considering its one of the most accurate battle rifles ever made...

I don't have any definative reason for my list, but these are the ones I think every shooter should own...

Krag
Schmidt Rubin 1911 Long Rifle (K-31 is neato, until you hold the long rifle)
1903 Springfield with a C-stock
M1917
No1mkIII Enfield

A swede 96 would be another choice.

I really don't get the facination with the K-31 on everyone's list. A nice rifle with great accuracy, but no better than some Swedes out there.

Yes I have a K-31 and all of the above.

I'll lump Mausers together. No particularorder

- M1 Garand: Everybody should shoot one of these. Nothing compares to them.
- 03 Springfield: A rifleman's rifle.
- Mauser: Best bolt action ever designed.
- Mosin Nagant based rifles including Finnish models: Surprising rifles. Can't beat accuracy of the Finn versions
- K31: Supurb workmanship and accuracy.

1) K31 Schmidt-Rubin - super accurate, very powerful, and fast/fun to shoot, and you get to know your chiropractor
2) M1 Garand - 'Cuz Uncle Sam wants you to have one, plus 8 rounds of .30-06 cand accomplish a lot
3) Swedish M96 Mauser - Some of the best in it's class, plus if you can find the carbine, they are very cool
4) No. 1 Mk III Enfield - You gotta represent our allies, plus they double as a club...or driveshaft.
5) 1917 Enfield - Very sturdy rifle, plus you gotta love the peep sight.

For my list: Krag, Swedish Mauser, Garand, and M1 Carbine would be on my list. I have not gotten ahold of a K31 yet, but the buzz here sure sounds great.

My top 5 is a list of rifles every fan of old military rifles should own, IMO.

1. M1 Garand

2. Mauser M98

3. Enfield (No.1 or No.4)

4. Springfield (1903 or 03A3)

5. Mosin-Nagant (M91, M91/30, M38, or M44)

Limiting the list to 5 was difficult, so here is the rest of my favorites to make it a top 10.

6. M1 Carbine

7. SKS (preferably Russian)

8. Swedish Mauser (M96 or M38)

9. Swiss K31 Schmidt-Rubin

10. Japanese Arisaka (Type 38 or Type 99)

If I had to pick the top five c@R rifles it would be.....
91/30
K31
any 98mauser really like my mexican mauser in 7mm
m1
how about winchester 1897 12 gauge trench gun

But if it were top five rifles period in my humble oppinion
ar15 scoped not best battle field rifle, but fun to shoot for the whole family
sks just about any variety
modern bolt gun 3006 like my savage but hey the 700 adl great too.
ak47 cause they just work.
and the 1911 colt great carry gun just a little bulky not a rifle but its really good anyway
