Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - How can I preserve an original German K98 sling?

I recently purchased an original german sling off of ebay. I received it in the mail today and it is a little brittle. Is there anything I can do to soften the material and prevent it from breaking apart? Right now, if I slide the length adjuster, some of the leather covering flakes off.

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to give.

Consider leather dressing. Google and read up as much as you can before you approach the sling with anything.
