What is your favorite and why.

I'll start and say the Mauser.

I have at least one of all the above but if I had to name a favorite I think it would be my lowly M1 carbine. Lightweight, easy to shoot and a blast to plink with, it is the one that gets to go out and play the most. After that the CETME is a fun gun too.
The Garand comes out for more serious shooting, hunting and Garand matches.

Although I don't own one yet my 2nd choice would be a 1903.

I would probaby go garand, but I've never even held one.

So... In my experiance K31.

Sweet action, excellent ammo, very accurate etc. etc.

as much as I like my Garand I have to go Mauser becouse ammo is alot cheaper.

Smith & Wesson, by far and away. I have far more Smith C&Rs than anything else. In fact, looking at it, if I include Colt I have more Smith and Colt C&Rs than all the others combined.

My favorite C&R Rifles have been Winchester Model 94s. The nicest I've found was one made during the late 80s or early 90s. It's a 30-30 saddle carbine and was unfired at the time. That didn't last very long. In this picture it's the rifle in the middle.

1.) American
2.) Semi-auto
3.) Accurate enough
4.) Reasonable recoil
5.) Nostalgic

First runner-up, "Persian" Mauser
Second runner-up, S-R K31

1st) Yugo Mauser. Hard hitting, accurate, fun to shoot. Butt stock design makes recoil a little more managable than....

2nd) M39 Finnish Mosin-Nagant. More accurate than the Mauser, but it kind of beats me up. The bolt handle seems to stick a little when it heats up as well.

SMLE's. Just bought another one.

The Mauser builds a nice sporter.
The Garands are getting to be too high priced
The SMLE is still fun to shoot, and will get your "bolting" skills on the road to improvement.

that is a very diplomatic way to convey the problems w/ mosins. my type 53 doesn't just stick - it downright catches. rubber mallet therapy is the only relief.

Favorite? The last one I bought:

1927 Springfield 1903M1 National Match. Paid $740.00 for it because it is "all wrong" and was going to break it down for parts. Started by removing the buttplate. In the lower trap was the original Springfield DCM paperwork. Sold 1930, rebuilt by same 1933 with clear description on rebuild invoice of nearly all that was "wrong" for a 1927 vintage NM (except the stock, original stock was "B", currently has a "C" stock on it).

Before that it was an original M1-D DCM mixmaster with a shot out barrel that I traded for preban M1A super match.

I have only found this problem with old (especially Chinese) brass cased ammo. the steel cased ammo does not seem to have this problem.

Right now i only have 2 rifles ,but have held many more. My favorite is my K98 because of the price of the ammo and the quality of manufacture. A close second in my opinion is the 91/30 then the Garand.

Swedish Mauser

- Excellent workmanship

- 6.5x55 round is exceptionally accurate and light in the recoil dept. (IMHO, the best round ever devised for a general issue bolt rifle).

- The Swedes took extra care in keeping their rifles in top shape.

- Never used corrosive ammo.

- Did I say accurate?

- The only negative- not much combat history behind it. Swedes don't fight in wars. (Although, I believe some were used by the Finns during the Winter War against the Russians.)

Its a hard choice but, I would have to go with my politically incorrect French(gasp!) MAS49/56. It's hard hitting, 100% reliable (wish my Garand was) Groups .75 inch with the sniper scope at 150 yards(the limit of my range) with reloads, and built like a tank. Its one sweet old weapon. The French didn't use em much. ;)

Garand, for patriotic and historical reasons....and the K-31...Swiss craftsmanship can't be beat. Plus, I have a few fantasy moments about the Swiss guards in the Vatican putting a few rounds through Ian Paisley with one lol. (don't ask, I told you it was a fantasy!)

As far as the MAS 49, one should seek out the earlier MAS 49.. The sights are much better for precision shooting.. I have a Syrian contract variant, which eats the Portugese made 7.5MM ammo just fine. Gives most M1A's a run for their money..

But I STILL like my SMLE's better..

My favorites in order:

1. K-31 Schmidt Rubin - most accurate.
2. U.S. model 1917 Eddystone - also accurate.
3. No. 4 MkI* Savage contract Enfield.
4. No. 4 MkI* Savage "Lend Lease" Enfield.
5. Model 38 Swede Mauser.

All the above better than all the other Moisin Nagants, Mausers and MAS rifles I own.

1) M 96 Swedish Mauser. The finest quality Mauser rifle, very accurate and very nicely finished. The 6.5x55 caliber bullet is almost perfect, with a high ballistic coefficient and sectional density making it a very inherantly accurate bullet.
2) Swiss K-31 7.5x55. Barrel free floated from manufacture and made like a swiss watch. As accurate or more accurate than the Swede.
Both of these rifles are capable of moa accuracy, although the issue sights make that very difficult, with milsurp ammo! Norma made the 6.5x55 Swede ammo, and the Swiss 7.5x55 is match grade ammunition.
3) M1 .30 carbine, just because it is so much fun to shoot. The only drawback to the carbine is that it is getting expensive, like the Garands and '03's.

For me...it would have to be the Garand. One cannot ever deny the usefulness of a long sight radius. For my less than perfect eyes, it allows me room for error less than others.

You are prepared for the clueless dumbass comments that you'll blow yourself up shooting a POS Spanish Mauser, aren't you? Some people can't tell the difference between the FR7 which is based on the weaker M93 & the FR8 which is the much stronger M98. Others know the difference but insist that all guns made in Spain are a grenade waiting to happen, even original M43 (M98) Mausers in 8x57.

My favorite? Rifle wise it's the various Mosin-Nagants. I like their fugly lack of style, not pretty like a Mauser but utilitarian.
Pistol wise-the M1895 Nagant revolver, for the same reasons as the Mosin-Nagant. They are so weird & funky that I can't help but like them. The C-96 Mauser broomhandle is on my wish list but $$$$$$

While the AR15 is not my favorite target or hunting weapon, it would be my favorite fighting weapon because of the speed of follow up shots, light weight, long range, and light weight ammo.

Mauser hands down. IMHO, the finest bolt action rifle ever made.

Although classified as such, I consider the C&R semi's to be modern weapons.
