My stock Ruger would do no better than 2" at 50yds with regular bulk-type ammo. Now, it has been customized beyond the plinker catagory:

using a scope and no other modification mine would do half dollar groups at 50yards, thats with a heavy ass trigger using RWS ammo.
i was also able to shoot empty 12ga shells at 100yards within 3-5 shots.

modified the trigger, but havent shot it yet.

although mine is not a plinker anymore i can get less than 1/2 in. groups at fifty consistantly.
for a plinker id suggest putting $30 into the trigger and a cheap .22 scope and it should be decent.
the 10/22 is a good choice i think because when you decide to go all out with the mods,(and you WILL sooner or later) you have the perfect platform. i cant think of any other 22 that you can do so many mods to.

My 10/22 is all fatory origional, I have put a 3x9 cheapy scope on it and I can accurately remove milk jug lids and 1 liter caps from Pepsi bottles at 75 yards with it. At 100yds I can keep 10 rounds in under an inch.

I have thought about putting a bull barrel and new trigger on it to see if I can get the groups tighter though.

With an aftermarket barrel (Volquartsen THM tension) my 10/22 will shoot non match grade ammo (CCI Mini Mag HP's) into 1/2" at 50 yards all day long. Groups at 100 yards are just over 1".

JUST HAVE TO ADD ONE MORE THING....

its great to bring the 10/22 to the range at the same time as the AR15 cause it causes me to conserve ammo with the AR. i take breaks and shoot the 22(and 22 ammo is about $50 per 1k as opposed to $170. also if i cant hit crap with the AR i CAN always hit what i aim at w/ the 10/22. (no, its not the AR, its me.)
