Not sure why but for some reason I have a hankering for a “fighting” or “riot” shotgun. Other than the obvious choice of Mossberg and their tang safety, what other shotguns have a safety that’s reversible for us lefties? I do not like Remington 870’s and I’m not opposed to considering “off” brands like Stoeger, Stevens, etc.

Ever consider a browning BPS?  Bottom load, bottom eject.

I actually have a BPS for hunting. They don’t make a “tactical” model, however, and the bottom loading port isn’t really conducive to select a slug or sustain loading.

Ithaca 37 or 87.
End of thread.

OK, let me clarify, no bottom eject shotguns.

I'm pretty sure Benelli safeties reverse (wish I'd known that before bought a LH gun as I would prefer a RH gun with LH safety) but it sounds like you're looking for a little cheaper gun.

Personally I would go ahead and get a Mossberg 500/590/590a1. They're very easy to run LH!

First, why no bottom ejecting shotguns?  The put the empties (if you reload, or have to pick them up when done) right in front of you on the ground.

How about an "old" Auto 5?  Safety is up front in the trigger guard.  Very similar to the M1 Garand and M14/M1A.  Push it forward for FIRE or push it to the rear for SAFE.

Then again, I am partial to the John Browning designs, like the Ithaca M37 and Browning Auto 5.

Never really been a fan of the Nova, especially the huge forend. Probably will just end up getting a Mossberg.

Like I mentioned, I just don’t think bottom eject guns lend themselves well to sustain loading and load switching.

I’ve ALWAYS wanted an Auto 5, for hunting though.

I was thinking of their semi autos, I have an M2 field myself, I know nothing about their pump actions.

I am right handed but I shoot my
shotguns left handed. I'm weird like
that.

I think the standard 870 is perfect
for a lefty, except for the safety.
I was using left hand button safeties,
until I found the S2 safeties, and I
have the on all 3 of my 870's &
my 1100. They can be set up for
left or right hand. They mimic an
AR safety, so back is safe, down in
go.

Good luck.

Didn’t think the safety was reversible on those.

Hey do you have this mounted on 870s with or without a pistol grip? I think I read somewhere it only works with pistol grip and I am not a fan of pistol grips on shotguns.

I don't have a pistol grip, but I will look at
one of mine to see if anything apparent
would be an issue.

I have one on a Tac-14, and there is no
problem on it.

I’ve just never been a fan. The hunting models don’t fit me, none of the aftermarket left handed safeties have been worth a damn, the inside of the receiver is SHARP, riveted ejector instead of removable and easily replaced, etc.

Well you did say Mossberg is the obvious choice ... I have no hate for other brands of course. You want a rugged shotgun to get the job done, there you go.

Are you thinking of a very short compact shotgun like the Shockwave or TAC-14? Or a standard one like the Mossberg 500 or 590?

You could also get a Mossberg 535 turkey gun chambered for 3.5in shells and saw the barrel off. Those 18 pellet 00 loads or 54 pellet #4 loads would be very discouraging to a wave of rioters I imagine lol.

I have 870's with left safety, right eject trigger plates installed. Mossberg 500's and 590A1's both gtg for lefties. The 37 is not really lefty friendly as the slide release is on the opposite side of the trigger plate. Benelli auto loaders can have the safety reversed.

I had a problem with my Ithaca 37,  hitting the safety with my trigger finger under recoil and clicking it to 'ON'. There is a lefty safety to be had, but I never switched it. It was the only older pump shotgun I had a problem with, not my Model 12, 870, or Mossberg 500/590.

Beretta 1301 is reversible.

I'm still partial to Mossberg's tang safety though. It's fast on and off as long as you're not a knob and use a pistol grip on it.

These old Savage and Stevens guns have tang mounted safeties. Weak point is in the way the stock is attached to  a pot metal lug, but its not a problem unless you buttstroke a lot of people

Benelli offers lefty versions of some of the shotguns. Ithaca is the answer you seek for a pump gun.  Don't write off the bottom feed gun until you try it. Besides slam fire on the older models there is also the ability to remove the barrel and leave the magazine tube loaded.

As I stated above, unless the Ithaca 37 has the lefty safety installed, the standard piece can hit the shooter’s left trigger finger at the palm under recoil. This can cause the safety to indavertantly click ON, as well as being uncomfortable.
