Mine holds 6+1. I have had it over a year now (I think) but only shot it this week for the first time with 10 rounds...5 standard #000 WW and 5 federal #00 reduced recoil. I have no idea how well they hold up to heavy loads, but the cowboy guys say they do fine with their wimpy loads. They appear to be pretty well made, especially for Chinese stuff and I would have no reservations about actually using mine for serious purposes, but I honestly think I would prefer one of my 870's for what you envision, as it is less expensive (if you buy used or get an Express Model) and a much simpler design with parts readily available and no chance of ripping your thumb / hand when working the action. Slam firing is useless for anything other than fun anyhow.

I would search the cowboy action shooter / firearms sites for info on these guns as they are the only guys I know who actually shoot the "Chinchesters" a lot on a regular basis.
