Please help me choose a gun/identify potential candidates:

Here are my requirements:
1. Bobtail style butt
2. Night Sights
3. Stainless Steel body & slide
4. Non-ambi safety
5. $1,800 or less

I would prefer a Commander length but will consider a full-size 5" gun.

What are my options?

Dan Wesson Vbob

I don't think there is any other option given your requirements. Dan Wesson all the way.

As others have said VBOB (Valor Bobtail) $1400 new, a used DW CBOB (Classic Bobtail) $800-900, or a used Ed Brown Kobra Carry (about $1700+or-). These are going to be your most common options. I have a Cbob and it is a very nice pistol, but it wasn't perfect out of the box and there was a issue where the slide was binding(galling) that I was able to fix myself. Things like that will teach you to use grease instead of oil on new stainles guns. Otherwise the gun shoots very well, but it isn't as well fit as my ed brown is. I've handled a few of the Kobra Carrys and I've considered selling my cbob to fund one of my own.

Thanks, that is the very gun I have been looking at.

What has changed with the VBOB from the older Classic model?
Link Posted: 8/29/2010 5:56:42 AM EDT
Why is the Classic so much cheaper? The ones I've seen, seem every bit as good as most 1911's in the 800-1200 range.

MIM? Looks like it lacks the checkering, but deos that really cost a lot? The DW Classic Razorback might work better for me than the Valor. I'm going to change sights anyway and refinish in Melonite or Ion bond after a few years of holster wear.

I believe that the Valor line varies from the Classic line in that it has even more attention to detail in the fitting department and comes with slim G10 grips. My cbob is very tight, but there are a couple of slight nitpicky imperfections here and there. There is more dehorning on the vbob as well. I don't believe there are any mim parts in the dan wesson guns, but I'm not sure.

The main price increase is based on the huge success of the first issue valor model. When the valor came out, it could be had for about 1200 new, but was comparable in quality to a springfield TRP, but with more classic lines than the very modern TRP. They sold so fast that I'd guess that they thought that the guns could still sell well at a higher price. CZ then raised the price of all of the DW guns, and changed alot of the linup.

kimber super carry. it has an ambi safety but that can be fixed and it is well within your price range. before i get flamed for recommending a gun with a swartz safety I should point out that it doesn't have one.

Dan Wesson CBOB. Discontinued for this year, but still available if you look around.

MIM? .

There is no MIM in a Dan Wesson. The price difference is because Dan Wesson raised prices by around 40% this year. Why? Because they could.

ADCO/RRA. Fantastic pistol.

Misses most of your requirements, but it's a hell of a pistol for the money.

If you can stand the wait - I think Fusion builds a bobtail

I think the price would be more painful than the wait.

Given that STI doesn't offer a model in stainless or with a bobtail, that kind of takes them out of the running.

Who else has bobtail models? I know that Kimber does but I'm not a big Kimber fan.

the only production SS Bobbed 1911's under $1800 would be the Dan Wesson V-Bob or the C-Bob and the Kimber.

The C-Bob is still being made since it's California OK, but the prices have creeped up from $1049 to ~$1200+, from what i've been seeing.
The C-Bob has a cast frame, while the V-Bob has a forged frame, which is why the cost went up.

another option is find a commander sized gun that you like and have it bobbed. it should still run less than $1800.
