My first ever 1911 a Dan Wesson vigil commander in 45. I am super impressed so far with how effortlessly accurate this thing is even at extended ranges, after 300-400 more rounds it will probably replace my g19 for edc and night stand gun.

Here are two I built from 80% frames. The one in the back was a Rock Island builders kit, and the one in the front is a Taurus PT1911 that was stripped down and sold without the frame. I cut the Nighthawk style front end into the Taurus with files after belt sanding the giant Taurus logo off the slide. They're manganese parkerized.

Originally Posted By SSeric02: Nice. How did you like the RIA builders kit? View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes It wasn't bad at all. A lot of MIM stuff as you would expect at that price point, but nearly everything was slightly oversized allowing for a perfect fit with some filing and sanding. I didn't have to touch the barrel bushing or lower lugs and link (which is good because the link pin is staked on both sides and wasn't coming out). I think I paid $350 from Hooper Gun Works for it? I didn't need to replace anything from it, I just wanted a stainless trigger and magwell/G10 grips. You can sort of tell in the pictures, but it came out a nice rich black in the parkerizing (I bead blasted with 220 grit after all of my fitting and testing); the Taurus kit came out a bit more grey with the same process. I don't have a mill or anything, I just got the frame cutter and the decking jig from Matrix and an assortment of files. You need a few other specialty tools like the barrel alignment block and locking rod, and you might need a lower lug cutter from Brownells. It's definitely not cheaper if you only build one or two, but building them is really satisfying and the tools should last me a lifetime of use so I'm sure I'll get my money's worth out of them. |
