i'm not happy with the stock sights on my GI (obviously) so i want to put some new ones on.  i found a rear night sight for $20 that fits a dovetail mount.  what kind of fitting would be required to put this on my gun?  also, can i buy the front night sight by itself, and what kind of work is required to install an aftermarket front sight?  thanks!

I strongly recommend that you locate a gunsmith familar with 1911's to install the sights for you. There are some pitfalls for the inexperienced that cannot be explained over the internet. The tools required for proper sight installation are also not cheap.
