What is the point of an ejection port being lowered and flared?

Is it for reliability? Should it be done anyway if your 1911 runs fine without it?

I'm not the most knowledgable person around, far from it, but if a gun works fine as it sits, I try not to mess with it...

if you reload the flared port doesnt ding to hell your caseings, my springer gi dents the cases, but you can tune your spring so it doesnt dent on the way out

Military 1911's ding the brass on the wall of the ejection port. Lower and flair the port and no more ding. Extended ejectors throw the brass more sideways than straight up and need a larger ejection port to work. If your gun works without issues, you don't need to change anything.
