I got the call today from CMP. I made a snap decision to go with field grade. There is some paperwork that needed to be updated so I'm guessing it will ship next week. I was RGN # 32,174. I sent my packet in on or near the last day.

If anyone wants to post that info on the CMP1911 forum, feel free. I apparently don't have the authorization needed to post yet. I did email the CMP forum about that because I'll want to post pictures soon. Hopefully NOT pictures of an IMI slide. I don't remember what manufacturer I was issued in 1990, but I'm 100% sure it was not a replacement slide because I remember it had a manufacturer's roll mark, I just don't remember which one. I want to retain the illusion that the one I get is the one I was issued.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy!! It's like Christmas early. Will I get a lump of coal, new socks, or a new pony? Stay tuned.

You're within 100 of me. I haven't had a call yet. Maybe this week. Also sent the last day of the "random" lottery. Bummed we're left with the bottom of the barrel.

That was one of my complaints too. "random" was not so random. The first round was completely different. If you sent your packet in on day one or the last day they all got mixed up, making it completely random. This round was supposed to be the same but it wasn't. The CMP is a mess right now.

I wouldn't say you are left with the bottom of the barrel guns. There are some really nice examples being offered right now.

Agree no worry. Just because they limited the applications doesn’t mean they don’t have a ton of pistols, and I have often ( personal experiences with the old DCM) sometimes it is a save best for last sort of thing.

So is it safe to assume there will be a round 3?

The "random" number pissed me off too. Next round I'll be mailing on day 1 that's for sure.

The 649th M.P. Co. was 'defederalized' from the 5th Army in to the CARNG in 1997.  They then became a component of the 49th MP Brigade, Fairfield, CA - and deactivated in 2017

I think the random comes in what they send you. I’ll likely get mine next week due to a paperwork issue, but as understand it, they open new barrels as they go, so you could have been RGN 20,100 and been the bottom of barrel number 1. So I’m not concerned with not getting a good pistol due to my high RGN. It’s just been a long wait. And the timing is such that my wife passed on it this round. If there is a round 3, she’ll be overnighting the application.

The only thing stopping a round 3 would be congress, since they have enough pistols I would guess in storage for a round 3. I think there should have been 48,000 pistols transferred since 2018. RGNs into the 34,000 range? Should leave 14,000 available currently for a round 3. Crossing fingers on that.

How long between the shipment email and actual shipment?  They didn't supply a tracking number.

There is no cost associated with the processing of this request.

Our pistols probably hung out together in the same rack for years.

I shot mine last weekend.  Did OK but not spectacular.  No issues with ball or hollowpoints.  Hung up a couple times on my lead reloads but just had to smack the back of the slide to lock it in before shooting.

The rack number wore off, though.  My rack number was 94 and yours 96 if I remember correctly.

Crazy.  Our pistols were rack-mates.

That is so damn cool.

@redleg13a

Any chance your slide has some hard-to-see / erased paint pen markings?

Not that I can see.  I looked at it under various lights and angles and I don't see anything to indicate any kind of paint or marker.

I wonder how many other guys are getting pistols from the same MP company?

I finally remembered to fire off the FOIA request using your format.  I asked for the serial of my old issue gun, the CMP I got and my buddy got too.

Fingers crossed.

UPDATE: They replied quickly.

Sir or Ma'am,
    LDAC has
received your FOIA request for three M1911A1 Caliber .45 Pistols serial
numbers (my issue gun), (my CMP gun), and (my buddy's CMP gun).  Please allow up to 3 weeks to
receive your response.
You are now # 63 in the
queue.  The DoD Small Arms/Light Weapons Registry history only goes
back to 1975 when the Registry was started.

What's interesting is that they don't show my issue gun as being at 2-37 or 3-34 Armor Regiment, 1st Infantry Division (Forward) Böblingen, Germany from 1988 to 1990.

Murphy is alive and well even if I’m not. After a long wait, I have to wait a little bit longer. My pistol just arrived at my FFL but I’m knocked out with COVID so I’m going to wait to go pick it up. My FFL, however sent pics of my field grade.

RR frame and slide, manufactured 1945. I’m no expert, but I don’t see any rebuild markings. Is this maybe original parkerized finish? Anyway, I’m very happy. Maybe not so much with the crappy engraving job someone did, but then again, I didn’t want or expect perfect. I wanted “been there, done that.”

About that time, I was in Erlangen in units of 2BDE, 1AD and this tells me while the guns are on the unit property book, that must be seperate from the small arms registry. I'd guess only someone in the support BNs or maybe Div G-4 had access to the small arms registry, and that is as far "down" as it went for weapons tracking, while the property book had the data down to company level.

Will check tomorrow, I’m bringing it to work to take apart and oil, I’ll look and update then.

Not matching as I assumed given the difference of wear. Would be cool to find the guy who has the matching frame and my matching slide and do a swapperooski.

If you ever find the matching SN# slide, that's equivalent to winning a jackpot. Not impossible, but 1 in a million or more.

BTW, What you got is already as good as you can get from CMP, Colt slide/frame from the same year. A winner. I know a lot of people would love to have Colt/Colt CMP more than other contractors. Just because it's a Colt 45.

Picked up my rack grade yesterday, a 1945 Remington Rand with matching slide and HS barrel. Just the condition I hoped for.

I got the call on the 20th, shipped the next day, and picked up a day later.

See how the text for "Remington Rand... NY" stretches all the way to the slide release?  On a Type III, the lettering is smaller and stops 3/4" to the left.  Type II is much less common than later guns with the Type 3 (short logo) slide, like mine, or even the Type I, where NY is spelled out; New York.

Matter only if the frame also within Type II SN# range. If not, it's just a Mixmaster USGI that have no more value than any CMP 1911 with mismatching parts.

I highly doubt CMP will let that one go and not put it on the auction if frame also a Type II RR. Would be interesting to find out the SN#.

I’m no expert, but I’ve slept at a Holiday Inn, so…

I was able to pick it up. The blob in the photo was just oil.

Stamping look pretty clean and I don’t see any arsenal rebuilds so original parkerized finish? Best I can tell from comparing cool gun site pics,  the thumb safety, hammer, slide stop, recoil spring plug and parts are consistent with a 1945 Remington Rand.

Replacement barrel marked .45 Auto, 7791193, 85 and an M stamped on the lug. Any way to tell the manufacturer of the barrel?

The magazine catch lock looked a little too good, and magazines were catching when trying to insert them. It seems the catch was sticking into the mag well about 1/32”. I used a dremel to take a little bit of the bottom edge to more of a taper and magazines now insert. I don’t think I destroyed any history, but I want functioning history.

I shot it and got a 3” group at 15 yards with 6 shots.

What concerns would you guys have shooting this pistol? Should I be concerned with damaging the slide with standard factory ammo? Any precautions to prevent damage?

No, it's a hard slide you won't damage it with standard ammo.

Make sure the springs are up to spec.  If in doubt, replace them.

Hard slides didn't hit the military until ~1947. That WWII-era R-R slide is not one of them. It'll last longer than the WWI-era slides, but not as long as the post-war hardened slides. I wouldn't think twice about taking it out a few times a year, but I wouldn't make it a USPSA gun.

This is the best advise if you shoot these CMP 1911s, doesn't matter if it has hard slide or not. You have no idea on the round counts of the recoil spring and firing pin spring in these pistols. $8-10 spent on the new replacement spring is a wise insurance.
