I love my job... I get to walk into my shop each morning to play with guns and build cool stuff. I also get to shoot a lot... and I get to shoot everything I build, a lot. I’m never really sure what part is better, the banging, scratching, cutting, machining, and working on the guns or the shooting part. One thing is for sure, the end result of delivering each customer just exactly what they want trumps all of that and this gun was no different while brining all of those fun parts together!
The customer had a solid idea of what he wanted the end result of this build to be, a full-house gun with certain key features. I started with an ‘80s vintage Colt Combat Commander and added a weld-up frame and slide fit, Kart barrel with EGW bushing, EGW grip safety pivoting on a Wilson BP ambi-safety, as well as best quality internals throughout the gun. The rear sight notch was opened to .135” and paired with a custom fabricated .110” wide orange-faced front sight with tritium insert. The slide top was flattened and serrated and front strap was high-cut and hand-checkered at 30lpi.
For the real fun parts I installed and hand-checkered a GEN 2 Chen mag-well as well as squared the trigger guard and hand-checkered the bottom at 40lpi. The slide was treated to ball-cuts at the front and serrated at 40lpi on the rear to match the sight. Finish on the gun is a traditional two-tone with polished blue top and a matte hard chrome frame. Grips are VZ Gunners as spec’d by the customer and when combined with the front strap checkering and checkering on the bottom of trigger guard the gun stays seriously planted during shooting.
