Are these really that important?  Why?

The only real "dated" handgun I have is a SIG P226 with a datecode for 1988.  The slide is even marked from manufacture in WEST Germany - obviously before the Berlin Wall fell.

Is there any premium for certain date codes?  Are there any "good" or "bad" date codes?

Yes, they're important for guns such as German Lugers & P-38s. It can add or detract value. Ditto for Colt SAA, their price from 1st Gen to 3rd Gen is greatly different.

AR-15s have pre- & post-ban, all on date of mfgr. I'm sure there's other examples but that's all I can think of right now.
