I have just located a source for a few new Mec-Gar 15 rd hi-cap mags for Ruger P-85's. My question is, since there was some sort of change in Ruger mags starting at some point in the P-89 series, will the older mags still fit and work reliably in the new guns? It seems the older Ruger mags were labeled P15 while the newer ones were labeled P18 or something. What's the difference?

Thanks,

I bought six of the 15 round Pachmyer mags for my P-89. They're marked P-85 but work fine in my P-89.

If you check Ruger's website, they have mags for P85/P89's before a certain serial number and another for after.  So my guess would be no.  Maybe it would be an easy fix to adapt the earlier mags to the newer P89's.  On a side note, the early P85/P89 hicap mags will work in the P91 and the P94.  The 15 rnd mags will hold 11 rnds of .40 S&W.  The Ramline 18 rnd mags will hold 13.

The P-15 has a metal floorplate, the P-18 has a plastic floorplate W/Ruger logo and for some reason at serial # 304-69999 they made the change.
So far, all the aftermarket magazines I have used interchange between the P-85 and P-89.
On the factory mags it looks the notch is not quite in the same place from the P-15 and P-18.
The best (and funnest) mags I found a few years back were from CDNN and were $29 each.
Shortly thereafter, the price went up and they were sold out.
They are the nickeled 20 rounders and have never failed me.

Thanks Gene. I guess these Mec-Gar's will work in the P-89's. I may pick up a couple and give em a try. If they don't fit it I can always get my money back on them (provided I sell them before the ban sunsets!).

A dealer told me all the P-series 9mm interchange from 85-85mkII-89-93-94-95-pcarbine in 9mm -->EXCEPT the P91's .40's n' P90's .45 of course
