Fellow handgunners. I am looking at this particular gun but want some input first. Looks to be a high quality, durable made weapon. Anyone who has experience with this particular weapon, let me know what you think. I have thick skin and appreciate all angles on the question. Thanks to those who reply!

Pro:

One of the top 5 guns in this caliber, IMO.  Compact enough to carry, and plenty of firepower.  Stainless slide helps if you are going to be carrying it a lot.

Con:

Most of the ones in my area are going for $650-800.

What would your choices be for the other top 4 guns in the .40?

H&K USP 40
Sig P229
Sig P226
Springfield XD40

Thats my 4 top choices, not necessarily in that order. Dont think you could go wrong with any of them. The P229 is an outstanding weapon and I cant really think of any cons to it. The one I had was flawless.

I own one of each of your first 2 choices.  Great guns, you can't go wrong with either.

Diablo, get the P229.

I agree, Sig offers only top shelf handguns. I like the compact version P-239. Sig has the best double action triggers, great single action triggers and wonderful sight systems.

H&K offers the most robust handguns on the market. Totally shootable, my personal preference is the USP Compact version.

Glocks do not fit my grip, try as I have, not very shootable for me.

I really like the 357 Sig cartridge, my choice over 9x19 or 40 S&W. Light recoil backed by hard hitting performance.

Try it I think you will like it.

I recently purchased a new P229 .357SIG and can't tell you how much I love it.  I wanted a Sig for a long time and finally got it.  You can't go wrong with a Sig IMHO.  There are no real cons with Sigs by the way, except the price.  I paid $450.00 after a trade.  The total was $625.00

You cant go wrong with any SIG.

SIG P226s or P229s would be my top choices in .40s.

Lightweight aluminum frame, but it still has steel to steel lock up.

If they are going for that much where you live,  check out some places online.  I bought my P220ST and P228 on gunbroker.com.  And I love them both.  I am looking into getting a P229 or P239 next.

I love everything about the Sig line (I don't know that much about the Pro's).  One of my favorites is my 225 (doesn't meet your criteria).  The only thing I don't like is their price.

I have been packing a 40 XD for 6 mo now.  I can not beging to say enough good things about the XD.  It is almost exactly the same size as a Glock 19. Carries well, shoots as good as any pistol I've shot.  And the price is right.

I did visit my gunshop today and saw they had a factory demo 229 in .40 with two 10-rounders.  $569. It looked awful nice too.

PROS:  They are awesome, one of the best guns out there.

CONS: None.

Get a P229 if its the last gun you every buy.  The .40 will knock someone on their ass, and its extremely fun to shoot.

I have the Sig P239 in .40 and though it's quite accurate and reliable, the .40 in that small a hangun has considerable recoil-I double-tap better with my S&W 686 357 than with the P239. The .40 seems to be much better in a larger frame hangun-one of my friends has a HiPower in .40 and it's SWEET. Go for the larger Sig, and you won't regret it.

get the 229, It's my favorite DA/SA pistol I've ever shot. Carried one for 10 years (still do) and can't think one one single thing wrong with it....

I like mine, my only con is the weight.

You can't beat a Sig P229. I have had one now for over 2 years and it is by far the best handgun I ever owned. No malfunctions, astounding accuracy, good feel and no broken parts yet. I consistently shoot this pistol better than any handgun I ever owned or picked up.....period. I can even shoot it better than my highly customized Colt Government Model.

The only negative thing I can think of is the finish. Sometimes the finish wears pretty bad on the Sig slides and it needs to be cleaned periodically and wiped down with an oily cloth, otherwise they can rust pretty easy as well. But a little routine maintenance and you'll be good to go.

Anybody read the GunTests issue on .40 Police Turnins?

They couldn't find anything wrong with the 229. (Even though they are idiots...)

It's what I plan to buy once I get a little more money.
