I needed a new pistol for the police academy seeing as I don't have one of the approved pistols and they don't allow 1911s. I went sat. and shot a 229 9mm and i was blown away. I have shot numerous pistols and always heard "get one that fits you" well my CZ 75BDfit me "well" and was ok until now. The Sig feels like an extention of my hand! this is the target from that day only shot it at 7 and 10 yards just to see how I liked it:

Then today I went back and wanted to try the 229 in .40 cal but they did not have one to rent so i went with the 9mm again I also wanted to try out the 220 .45 because I prefer to shoot .45 anyway. well here are the results of that trip again 7 and 10 yards.

Note: these are NOT typical results for me, I always thought of myself as a mediocre pistol shooter at best, no longer! I'm even thinking of selling my CZ and possibly my SA WWII .45 to buy the 229 and later the 220.

I can't speak for you, but I love the 220.

I'd hang onto the 1911 and get the 220. A 226 or 229 can come later.

The 229 is the absolute best production combat hand gun made today.

Nice shooting!

Negative ghostrider, the P226 is better....the P229 is a close second

I discovered similar results with my 226. It's like you have to try to miss. Congrats on breaking your Sig cherry. Now you know.

I'll get the 220 soon enough but I feel for the academy 9mm would be better.

My 220ST is a shooter. My buddies 228 and 226 Navy are dead nutz accurate as well.

I opened this thread with the expectation of some gun pron and I get nothing but holes in paper.

What a tease.

+1 I felt the same way when I picked up my first sig the other day and had the same results I fired alot of pistols but so far Sigs have been the best IMO.

Personally, I think Sigs are great guns; I say get the 220 first, then get the 226.

Here's the first 5 shot group I fired with my new (sort of) Sig P226 in 9mm from 21 feet using Winchester 115 gr. FMJ.

Sigs are just so accurate out of the box; makes you wonder why the big wigs in the military didn't take the Sig over the Beretta; but that's old news, so no need to rehash it.

When you said that the pistol was a "extention of my hand" I got a big smile on my face because that is EXACTLY what I thought the first time I ever shot my SIG 239 9mm. My 220 is almost as perfect.

You did shoot it DA/SA?

Some people just squeeze off in SA mode only and get surprised that they actually have to use DA for the first shot

Can't argue that. My P229 (.357Sig) is an ultra-reliable tack driver.....

First shot was DA and all subsequent shots were SA, ensuring I follw up each shot.

I highly recommend the 229 or 226 - hold off on the 220.

I agree. I personally prefer the 228 in 9mm to the heavier 229, but the 9mm is definitely a plus during your academy.

+2

A SIG is a very manly gun.....therefore you are gay.

220, Takes a lickin, keeps on tickin.

Wont a 9mm P229 accept 9mm P226 mags? If so how about a P226R for duty and P229 for off duty carry?
Link Posted: 4/12/2006 9:02:35 PM EDT
The 226 felt barrel heavy to me. More than likely I won't have a choice what I carry on duty.

Yeah, a 228/229 will accept 226 mags. Brownells also sells base plates that make the 226 fit flush in the 228/9, which is what I think I'm going to do when I get my 229.

Underdog, those aren't factory grips, are they? And what do you have on the front strap?

220's Rock!
I'll get mine back from trijicon one of these days.
I'm going through withdrawl so I hope I get it back soon.

Forgot to mention what ammo I shot those groups with. The 9mm was Winchester value pack and the .45 was American ammo. I had to use the ranges ammo and thats what they gave me...im sure those groups would have been better with quality ammo.

I had the 226 and the 228, and the 228 could use 226 mags; however, it was my understanding that 228 and 229 mags were not compatible for some reason (slightly differing dimensions?), which makes me wonder if 226 mags can be used with the 229? I've never tried that particular combo, so I could very well be wrong.

I love my P220, P228, P239.

Other handguns come and go out of my safe, but the Sigs always stay, also most often use for CCW of all my handguns.

Maybe I should get rid of the rest....so I can buy more Sigs.
