Went down to the gun shop today looking for a .45, the two that i liked were a rock island armory standard model for $348 and a Springfield Mil-Spec for $415.  Which is a better gun as far as fit and finish go, and which is a better buy?

Springfield, no contest.

I own both and the RI is dependable and would be fine at short distance for self defense, but for the little extra $ I paid for my Springfield it is a much better weapon. If you're only going to have one the SA would be the one IMHO... $415 for the mil-spec is a good buy too.

Was the Rock Island pistol one of those polymer framed POS?

Go with the Springfield.

Both were blued steel.

What should I look for with the springfield?  The one thing that bothered me was the mag well on both of the pistols, seemed a little "gritty" and too tight.

Still the Springfield, then. A new Springfield for $415. That's a pretty good price.

One last question, is the springfield chrome-lined? I forgot to check.

Springfield is by far better. I have two of them.

My RI is visually the same as the SA. Both parkerized and both very basic 1911's, but the fit and edges are better on the SA. Neither had very good grips or mags, but those are easily upgraded.

The 'grit' you see/feel is probably just the park. Rougher feeling than blue and usually needs good lube to for the action to feel smooth.
