My new SIG 229 has what appears to be laser etched serial numbers and markings.
My question is, how durable are these and will they wear off with time, cleaning, holstering etc... ??
What's the advantage to them vs the rolled or stamped markings ? My guess would be cost.

I originally posted this in GD but I think I might get more responses here.
One point that was brought up was refinishing a firearm with these types of serial numbers and possibly covering them.

Not all the numbers are laser etched. Somewhere on the gun, they're stamped, I bet.

Yes, cost is why they've gone to laser etching.

I don't see any other serial numbers or markings that aren't etched.
Unlike my older SIGs which have the stamped marks on the frame, slide and barrel.
Anyone else have any thoughts ?
