First of all I love the .45 caliber. Looking for a good dependable handgun in .45 that won't cost over $500.

+1 for Springfields GI/WWII line.  Real 1911's, not 1991's for a great price!

+1 for the Ruger P90. I've had one for years and love it. And the stainless steel finish is nice for Rainy Georgia days.

Armscor/Rock Island/High Standard 1911A1 all the same basic gun and all good shooters.

CZ 97B
Ruger P345 or 90
Witness .45 (I prefer the steel framed witness)
Glock (You can find them used but like new for under $500 some times.)
Springfield Mil Spec or G.I.
Sig 220 from CDDN in Excellent to like New condition.
Baby Eagle (Again I prefer the steel frame on these).

I would get any of those and already have most of them.

Springfield GI and 4 Wilson combat #47D mags.   Reliable as a hammer and makes a great custom gun when finances allow.

+1 for me.  I have a GI that is uber reliable, eats anything I throw at it and has yet (in nearly 2000 rounds) had a FTF/FTE.

+1 for Springfield’s GI and I have no doubt that the new XD .45ACP is going to as reliable as the rest of the XD line.

For under $500, the P220 would have to be a used item....

But come to think of it, I would take a used P220 over a new Ruger.

You should be banned.  That is the worst gun I have ever fired- bar none.  I was shooting it for free and just felt sorry for the owner, however, in hindsight I should have demanded compensation. I have never felt anything like that.  I am scarred.

Cheers

My used P220 was a POS, had to spend nearly $700 for a new one to be reliable.   My first was a West German P220 and couldnt make 50 rounds without malf.   My new P220 has been totally reliable.

I agree. The steel-framed Witness pistols are highly underrated. This is a good thing though, if you happen to be in the market for one.

In defense of Ruger my P345 has been more problem free than my SIG 220ST although I love my SIG and do not regret getting it. It is nicer as far as it feels a little better machined but so far my $400 Ruger has been just as good in accuracy and reliability. However I certainly do not blame you for liking the SIG since it is a fine firearm.

not anymore they don't.  i don't know exactly when they converted over to conventional rifling but at least the ones made over the last year have conventional rifling.

I've got two cheap .45s - a Springfield GI and a Taurus PT145. Before shooting either, my girlfriend (new to firearms - but loves shooting) liked the Taurus, but at the range she strongly preferred the GI. My only reason for getting the Taurus was for concealed carry - which I actually haven't gotten around to being licensed for yet.

With a name like "Moe-Ron", the man must speak the truth.  I fired my cousin's 24/7 and the trigger was long and gritty.  If you slap in a mag with the slide locked back, the slide would release. I have a Taurus revolver in .357 and it's an excellent firearm (1000's of rounds, very accurate, clean break on the trigger in DA+SA) but the 27/7's on my shit list.
