10, minimum.

As many of them have said, the bare minimum is 3 and the average would be at least 5 for a normal double stack 13-15 round mag. I've been to many range trips with a newly bought pistol with only 2 factory mags and having to stop and reload every 2 mags is frustrating and takes away the range time and enjoyment. Now coming to 1911s though, the more the merrier. Those 8-10 rounders run off before you can blink.

8-10

three for carry

three replacements left NIB

two or more for range / training

I have 20-25 per handgun & AR , just recently sold a few g19 mags so that I'm where I need to be with my mags per handgun/AR.

I only have 10 for my m&p 15-22 so thats gonna change soon cause that thing is fun......

hate loading mags in the few classes I've had pleasure of attending & I remember the AWB so I won't go thru that again.

they are cheap , why not.

Minimum 3 for the range, then how ever many my tactical loadout is, typically 3-4 and then minimum an extra 2 spare

Remember, we never have enough. Ask about the 94 ban again.

That said I thought ArfCom had settled on 10. Then you start buying them only when on sale.

Yup. Ten is your minimum, then start looking for sales and never stop buying.

My policy is every time I go to a gun store I buy one mag and one box of ammo (minimum).

Depends.  I remember the ban and the prices asked for Glock mags .  So if it is a mag that holds more than 10, I'm buying lots.  For smaller ones like a P3AT or G26, less... but I'll still buy deals.  I think I have 6 for my 26 and 8 for my 29 and 4 for my 30s..but those both also can take full sized mags..which I have more than 6 and 4 for.  I also have mags for guns that I want the option to someday acquire and be able to feed them from a larger than 10..or less..round mag.  In case something stupid like the 10 round limit happens again.

For rifles? Luckily I got into the AK74 game when mags were cheap...and AR mags?? I have rubbermaids full...

For my EDC I have one in the gun, two in my car door, two in my wife’s car door, one in the wife’s glove box, four in my camper, two in my bag, two on the fireplace in the living room, two on the entertainment center, two on my nightstand, and then one in the backup gun, plus a few range mags.   So twenty-five mags between the two guns about does it.

Three-four for every 5000 rounds I expect to shoot through a pistol.

$5-6-700 for a pistol.

$6-700 for magazines.

$7500 for 30,000 rounds.

Round numbers.

10 is the absolute minimum in my book. Over the years I standardize and got enough G19 for every abled body person in my family + 1 more incase I have a guess over. Now I am behind of my minimum. Just glad I didn't decide to standardize with HKs or Sig.

Depends on the gun.

20 magazines for a full size is perfectly reasonable, 20 magazines for your G42 is a bit excessive.

For basic supply, all you need are as many as you will need to use the gun in the manner for which it is owned.

If it’s an important gun, then also as many as might be needed to replace the basic supply.

If you blow through the full basic supply, AND all the replacements, you probably have a bigger problem than simply a shortage of magazines.

Otherwise, hoard at will. But you will never need, or use, more than the basic supply and the replacements.

It depends on the gun.

Your primary gun? 5-10 is probably good, more if it's something that has multiple sized (i.e. you have a Glock 19 but also Glock 17 mags)

Competition guns? AT LEAST 10.

Backup guns? 5ish is probably fine.

Fun plinkers? As many as you want to not reload.

Historical stuff? At least 1, hopefully.

Anything else? 2 or 3 is fine.

minimum 3 to 5 but prefer to have more as it allows me to maximize my range time instead of loading magazines on paid range time.  Have 10 for my edc pistol

I have at least 10 per pistol that I regularly shoot, including my HK’s, CZ’s, Beretta’s 1911’s, 2011’s and Glocks. Most of my 22’s have at least 6 per gun but the small pistols I have just for fun like the Beretta 950’s and 21’s only have 3-4 a piece.

I grew up during the Clinton AWB and have been steadily buying mags since 2002.

My minimum per handgun is 10 which equates to one in the hand gun and four on the belt times 2 as spares or for rotation. My minimum per rifle is 20.

I like at least 10 per gun, but sometimes that's impossible in the case of OEMs that are unobtanium or unaffordable.

Commonly available carry guns get more, range only get less.

How old were you in 1994? Or, 1986? Or, 1968? Or, 1934?

What will, eventually, come, is much worse.

older I get, the smaller the number becomes...

if its something you aren't super attached to and its a range toy, 5 mags total.  Fills out a 4 mag pouch plus one in the gun.

Something you compete with and its your SHTF gun.  7 plus 3-4 spares you keep NIB.  If you are a young guy under the age of 35, maybe double that.

Minimum is 10 magazines for each firearm.  For my Ruger 10/22 rifles, 10 each BX-10 and 10 each BX-25 magazines.  For my Smith & Wesson Model 41 I have 18 magazines.

12 is my magical number or more.  10 range mags and 2 carry mags is the ideal number.  Ideally I like more because I like to load up a lot of mags when I go to the range and not speed tons of time just reloading mags.

Anything that is regularly used I like to have at least 10. I go higher if multiple weapons share magazines. I would rather reload mags at home while watching/listening to something than at the range. I don't usually go all out and get to 10 the same day I get a new gun. When I look into the cost of a new gun I factor in the gun plus the cost of extra mags to get me to five. Over the course of a year I'll get to ten. I also almost always buy when the price is right. Almost all my M&P 45 mags are police trade in.

I try and have a min of 10 for any handgun whose standard capacity magazine is above 10 rounds.  I’m almost there and will be before the election.

Also have a few more 10 round 22lr handgun mags left to buy for my Ruger Mk3 and my Browning Buckmark.

I like to have at least 5 magazines for any gun that I carry or take to the range on a regular basis.  I'll make due with 2-3 mags for a safe queen if the mags are difficult to find or overly expensive.

I DESPISE loading magazines on paid shooting time, so I probably carry more than most. I bought three more for my primary gun a few weeks ago just because they were on sale at a good price. They haven't even made it to the range bag yet.

I think 7-10 is very useful. From my 1911 days, I liked having a sufficient number to help diagnose any problems. For some pistols, 10 magazines is a LOT of money! I certainly don't have 10 for my .22s.

I guess that I have more guns than other people have magazines. I have over a dozen Swiss Hammerli International magazines and over a dozen Swiss SIG P210 mags, not to mention FN Medalist and Walther PP rimfire mags. Of those I am proud because I needed years to find and accumulate them. AR and Glock mags can be bought easily.

I'm old enough to remember that back in the day (late '80s) 6 mags was considered the 'standard' minimum for any gun you might carry: 3 mags reserved strictly for 'training'/practice, and three to be kept loaded with your carry ammo.

But having lived through the Clinton AWB/hi-cap mag ban, yeah I'd agree that now 10 is the minimum for any semi-auto pistol you own, and there's no downside to stocking more.

At some future point down the road, you can always sell or gift away any mags you aren't using, especially if they feed a common 'service pistol' in a common caliber.

Wow, the numbers are all over the place. I see a few folks having good rationale behind their numbers but most seem to be unspecific.

I think a good number that isn't too crazy is 4 per handgun. I think this is a good number for a lifetime of use under normal conditions even for defensive purpose. I still have a 1911 magazine that I've been using since about 1993 and it hasn't been deformed or anything of the sort, just finish worn off pretty badly. Of course new springs are in it but otherwise the body is fine. If you plan to get into competition or just running your gun hard, you probably need more magazines depending on how you use it. But that's not the only item you need constant replacement of as your barrel, springs, etc would get worn out a lot faster than just normal usage.

More is always better of course.

I figure 5 as the minimum.  That gets you one in the gun, two in a shoulder mag holder, and then 2 on a belt holster.
