I have shot or carried most popular pistols over the years.  I thought I found my perfect pistol in the m&p 9 with thumb safety.  I don't like striker fired pistols without a manual safety.  Unfortunately, I think I am developing some arthritis in my thumb which might make a TS problematic.  It looks like most companies have dropped true hammer fired DAO versions of products (i.e.:  sig DAK, Beretta 92D, etc).  Are there any models that are still made or readily convert able to DAO?

HK's LEM might be an option

Discontinued, but takes 320 mags & grips.

P250 would be perfect if not discontinued.  I do recognize it's being sold as a .22 now.

Have 2 HKs with LEM. I have a light LEM that breaks around 4.5 & another V4 which breaks around 7.5lbs. Both have hammers but when you rack the slide to load a round you internally precock the hammer spring.... so there is where the system is different from a traditional DAO and not a "true DAO" but a compromise of some of the elements of DA and Striker.
I personally like the system but I recognize it is not everybody's cup of tea. Try one Out if you feel it fits your needs.

Another HK LEM suggestion.

We have 2 nib 9mm 250s in stock at my shop.

I know they're discontinued but they can still be found.

There's a nice 96D at another local shop I have no affiliation with and it $350. I've almost bought it a couple times

S&W 686.

I know it's not a semi auto, but it's the best DA out there.

HK LEM is the best DAO trigger ever!!! I love the P30L for a duty gun or home defense. Or P2000 for a compact conceal carry peice. Or even the older USP models, full sizes or compacts. now if you're looking for a smaller pocket gun, then I'd look at the Ruger LCP DAO 380acp or something.

Sig or HK in this case is probably your best bet.  Beretta's are nice as well, but you have to be cool with the 92 series.

Why would anyone have any issue with the dao beretta if they're looking for a dao?

Some dislike the beretta in general for one or more reasons. Usually...

open barrel design
grip size
trigger reach
overall size
inability to change front sights easily (vertec and m9A3 excluded)

personally...I really want a 92FS compact and M9A3. I like the platform a lot.

HK LEM for hammer fired, or check out the Walther P99 AS. It's a striker, but can be decocked for a true DAO first shot. It's a DA/SA striker pistol.

ETA: Beretta makes a DAO version of their PX4.

Didn't know of a DAO px4.

As far as revolvers - that options covered.

Actually there's two versions. The D model which is a true DAO, and the C model which is a partially precocked version. The latter is harder to find. Both come only in full-size.

You forgot the slide mounted safety / decocker.

Ruger's LCP is DAO.  I didn't know the PX4 had DAO versions.  I had my eye on the sig 224 for a while, but I think that's gone now.

Besides the open barrel and the front sight the rest can be attributed to the Sig as well.

I thought you liked them. It just struck me as odd that the Sig didn't get the same preface.

Yup, and you got a good memory.

With Sig you also have the slide stop/release location which I find super irritating. Not really a big deal if you slingshot at slide lock though.

Perosnally I think HK did this one quite well. The light LEM is quite nice.

Why not put the NY trigger in a Glock?  Poof!  Instant lousy 12 lb trigger pull.

While the P07/P09 and the Omega versions of the P01 and CZ 75 may not be "DAO" they can be carried with the decocker vs. the safety.

With the decocker installed you carry it with the hammer "decocked" and if you need to use it you pull the trigger (DA for that first shot, SA for the following shots) till you've finished your business.  THEN, after you've finished your business you can take your time to push the decocker lever to drop the hammer back to the "decocked" position and reholster (if you need to reholster).

I have the C model.  I'd gladly trade trigger parts to make it a D model as I would prefer double strike capability without having to rack the slide.

As to a Double action hammer fired recommendation, I'd say find a P250C or an older Smith 3rd gen.  I've owned a HK LEM and couldn't swap it fast enough for a DA/SA one instead.  Hated the LEM.  Hate the DAK on Sig's too.

If you don't mind .40, especially with the P226 it'll tame it nicely:

Police trade-in .40 P226 DAK (under $400)

Carried one at work for years and still own several.
Stupid reliable. Mags and springs still available.
Priced right in the used market.

3rd gen S&W are a bargain.

No hammer to put your thumb on when holstering.  Just an added safety step of a hammered DA auto.

Au contraire.  There is now an aftermarket  backplate that you can push on to lock the striker.
