I am heading out soon for at least 4 months to AK camping/working mining.
I am bringing one of my shotguns, either a Benelli M4 or a 870 police but not sure which one yet (see poll in shotgun forum).
I have a few choices for my sidearm:
6" S&W  629 classic .44 6"
Glock gen 4 20 10mm
I have other .45's also: glock 21, hk 45c, springer TRP but I think I will stick with the .44 or the 10MM.
Mostly for protection but a little casual hunting may be in order too. I shoot both adequate/fine for accuracy.
thanks for any ideas!

Glock 21 or the HK 45 probably the Glock 21 because see below.

I would take the 870 it works and if it get stolen\lost\damaged it is cheaper to replace than the Benelli.

Are grizzly a serious concern? Then .44
If not, I'd be okay with 10mm

If I were in your boots, I would barrow my sons S&W 460.

For what you own, the G20 because it's on my wish list

I'd bring the TRP

OH, and the Benelli

In the most dire circumstances, you may only have time to get one round off. I would pick the 44 magnum over 10mm any day unless its a collector item, a safe queen, or something you want to keep nice. Glocks are cheap, they can be beat up. Thats the only reason I'd pick the Glock over the S&W... But otherwise, the power potential of the 44 magnum blows the 10mm out of the water.

Glock 20, easy answer, much higher weight to power ratio than 45auto and because quick reload....

AK pistol.....duh.

Take the g20 and 629 out and do a little shooting compedition between them.

Quick shots on 6" target at 20 yards while moving. See which you do less shitty with.  Or something like that.

Glock 20

Powerful enough for mostly anything, with a good hard cast it'll do.

Easy to carry which means you'll probably have it when you need it.

Your 2rds short of it being a 44 with 2 reloads.

Stick a light on it and your done.

But whatever you choose have a great trip. Wish I was going.

I'd go with the .44 and the 870.

Good excuse to get one of these.

Glock 20 and the Remington 870P.

Yep, the Glock 10mm and the 870.

Out of the list of guns you gave I'd go with the S&W model 29. I wouldn't carry anything less powerful than a .44 magnum out in the woods. Especially in Alaska.

With the Buffalo Bore's offerings of Keith Hard Cast flat point bullets I'd say either the G20 or the Smith 629 will be more than adequate. Personally I'd be leaning more to the 629 myself because a 340 grain flat nose Hard Cast bullet @ 1400+fps hits harder than anything 10mm can do. Chances are you are only going to get off 2 maybe 3 shots before you are in real trouble. Make them count with the hardest hitting pill. As far as the shotty, the 870 pump would be my choice. A pump shotgun is about as reliable as it gets. Stagger the tube with 00Buck and rifled slugs when out fishing, etc...

Glock 20 with 200 grain lead hard cast.

I am leaning toward the .44 with the Diamond D holder holster. Unfortunately they are back logged and I won't have time to wait for them. Right now, I have a basic leather holster that should be ok.

Truthfully, it's what a few of the fishing guides I've talked to do. First shot you have the buck for it's slight spread the second shot the deep bone crushing rifled slug and so on. That's why I assume they do it and would be my line of thought as well in brown bear territory.

ETA: and I know it's not the norm... but I've had cycling problems with a Benelli. That was almost 20 years ago though so I guess I need to get over that.

44 magnum. It's bullet mass is an advantage here. The Glock 20's capacity, while nice, is not a big factor.

I'd take the 870 and the 44.  I have a Benelli M2 Tactical l and love it, but I'm anal over it too.  If I were you I'd also look at taking a 22 handgun of some description for those down times.  Have a safe trip.

What is the plentiful ammo out there?
