I was thinking M&P9mm when I saw the thread title. However, I would go with the "C" model. I had both the 4.25 and the 3.5 models in .40... I sold the mid-size because it was really closer to a Full Size to my brother and kept the Compact. The finish on these pistols is very durable, almost to that of my Hard Chrome finished pistol. I just fell the compact is the perfect size for carrying in public and the woods. A 3.5" barrel is more than plenty enough left for velocity; especially Buffalo Bore's "Woodsman" loads!
ETA: My M&P40c came with a pretty damned good trigger out of the box. All I added to it was an Apex Reset Assist Mechanism for $20 and 15 minutes of extremely minimal effort. I added Meprolite sites in about 20 minutes too. The M&P is the AR-15 of the handgun world for aftermarket support and the ease of modification. My M&P40 4.25" trigger was awful. I had to install a new $120 trigger right away. An Apex competition sear, striker block, return spring, R.A.M., and a reworking of the trigger bar. |

+1 for used/trade-in Glock
couple years ago I paid $325 for a Gen 2 19 with night sights, a blade tech holster, 5 mags and 300 rounds of 9mm FMJ... has a few thousand rounds through it since then with zero issues. . It's still friggin' ugly, but it goes bang every time. Since that point, I only buy beat-up used Glocks. Great value for the money, and Glock will refurbish them for free. If i'm looking for a "beater" gun, I'm going to look for the well used/worn gun that has proven it can take a beating rather than the cheap new gun that hasn't been put through the ringer yet. |

Cz75 or clone (EAA). I picked up a witness in .45 for around $150

you can find FN FNS-9's for around $400 now and those would be my no1 recommendation

I CC my Shield and put LOTS of rounds through it so I love the S&W brand overall except for the SD9VE (HATE the trigger). I would also highly recommend the Canik TP9 especially after buying one for $329 and it came with the holster and two mags and it's 18 + 1. The trigger is awesome but now I have to buy one for my wife.

It's funny that you guys are mentioning the Canick TP9, the LGS was pushing them hard as a "good, low budget" handgun. I will admit, the trigger was nice.

I went through the same exercise recently in wanting to get a different full size woods carry pistol. I ended up with a H&K USP police trade-in for $390. What also drew me in was that extra mags are being offered by the same dealer for only $13.

If you want new and are ok with DA/SA give the Tristar line a look. CZ clone for $329-$359 at Academy sports.

I will likely get a TP9SF as a "cheap" gun to keep in the SUV, but I'm currently saving for the CZ P10C (which for $432 shipped is only like $72 over "cheap" to me).

Classic smith model 10 revolver. Can leave loaded and unattended literally for decades and still be depended on. 300 bucks or even less with a bit of searching. If you prefer stainless ( I personally do not) I have bee in 2 shops with smith model 64's( stainless version of the ten) wth $300 o the price tag View Quote |

Makarov trumps everything you listed and can be had 'unissued' for $300-350

I follow mrgunsngear on Facebook and he posted that they had them for $399 + a $30 off plus free shipping coupon. $379.99 shipped after a $10 ffl fee and it came pretty dang fast. Picked it up today along with an AR lower and vicker g17. |

BigHutch:
It was $432 at KyGun, but then that price changed to the 10rd version, but the tactical ("17rd") version was still priced at $454, which was like $45 cheaper than the non-tactical version. So obviously they're still tweaking prices. |

Out of your choices, the M&P.
Outside of your list, a LEO Trade in G17 (Gen3 with the older teflon-like finish). No better "rough use" gun out there. Or if you really want to keep the cost down and have something that you wouldn't have to care about losing or destroying.. S&W SD9VE. Great friggin gun for the money (~$280 on sale) |

JGSales just got a bunch of Ruger P89 police trade-ins. Not the prettiest, but they are $199. I had one way back when, and it was absolutely reliable. Went bang every time. JGsales Rugers

I'm not very brand loyal, so any of those named should fill the bill for you. That said, there are plenty of PD/Agency trades out there at very good prices. I picked up a clunky old Ruger P95 9mm for around $200. Makes a fine truck gun.

I'd also put any of the 3rd generation S&W pistols on this list - 5906, 4006, 4506, etc. The DA/SA versions can be had for sub $400 and the DA only versions can be had for sub $300. They are overbuilt guns that will last for decades.

New Stoeger Cougars on Gunbroker for $319. Tough to beat that.
For CCW the Shield 9 seems tough to beat. |

Well, with the big rebate on the M&P Shields going on right now I couldn't resist. Got an M&P9 Shield for a grand total of $279 new (includes the $75 rebate). I would have rather had something with more capacity, but oh well, the price couldn't be beat.
ETA: I'll probably due MagGuts on the extended magazine for 9+1. |
