I have read a couple of messages that lead me to believe a magazine for an XD40 will fit an XD9.  My question is how many 9mm rounds will an XD40 magazine hold?  Is there any modification required to make the XD40 work properly in the XD9?

About 15 rounds I think.  You may have to adjust the feed lips also.  Some need it and some work just fine as is.

An XD40 or XD357 Sig magazine will hold 15 rounds and functions fine with little or no modification.  All of my XD357 Mags have been used in my XD9 without a problem. I have little need for the factory 10 round mags.

Thanks to both of you.  I have a couple of Berreta 92FS magazines that I modified (cut a hole) that function fine.  The only problem is a gap between the base of the magazine and the grip.  I'll check for an XD40 or an XD357 SIG magazine at the gun show this weekend.

Just for your infomation, hicap mags for the Ruger P85/89 will function in the P91/94's as well.  The 15 rnd mags will hold 11 .40 S&W, and the Ramline 18 rnd mags will hold 13.  Pass that info on to your buddys that have those .40 S&W Rugers.

Just watch those Beretta mags.  Make sure they don't make contact with the ejector on your pistol. Sometimes you don't notice when you lightly insert the mag; you've got to push the mag with some force to ensure that there is zero contact.

Just got home from the local gunshow where I picked up an XD357 SIG magazine.  It fits my XD9 perfectly and it does hold 15 9mm rounds.  The dealer only had 1 magazine, next show I'll pick up more.  Thnaks again.
