Just wondering what updated the 686 has been given over the years? Any strength improvments? Also is there and pros/cons to the square butt vs. the round butt handles? Thanks!

The 686 has pretty well stayed the same strength-wise.
The only real question is in the MIM Metal Injection Moulded parts now used.
Most people don't think these are as strong as the old forged and milled internal parts.

Most people think the "improvements" AREN'T.

There is no difference between the round and square butts other than personal preference.

Off the top of my head, the biggest differences are the MIM as previously mentioned, and the frame mounted firing pin. I think but am not positive that both come into being on some -4 models, but not all.  Mine is a 686-4 with out the MIM trigger and hammer, and it still has the hammer mounted firing pin.

I believe the new ones will have the new 2-piece barrel, a big improvement IMHO.

I would think 1 solid piece would be better.
