I would love to see a 44 special similar to the S&W model 58 (58 is like a big model 10 but in 41 magnum). I really like the looks of the barrel without underlug and fixed sights. I suppose I could just get a model 58 though, but I too like the 44 special.

Still have my 67-69' dated Bulldog. Also had a Taurus 431 3" 5 shot .44 SPL for a few years but never warmed up to it like my K frame 3" guns.

I have a strong lust for a 24 or 624 but haven't ran across one for a price I'm willing to pay yet.
Love the .44 Spc and .44 Mag cartridges! Attached File |

There is something special about 44 mag and 44 special. The biggest thing I shot growing up was a 357. When I was in the Academy I got to shoot a seized 44 mag Colt. I wish I could drop the $ for a gun that awesome! I still scooped up a 44 Rossi lever action and a couple S&W model 629-2. They are all awesome guns!

I'm a big fan of the .44's, including the 44 Special. I've had a few dedicated 44 Specials but currently just 44 Mags. For what it's worth, most of the time you really don't need the 44 Mag as a moderate to warm 44 Special will work just as well for most instances.

Kinda have a soft spot for the Jeff Quinn commemorative, so trying to hang on to it in pristine condition. Doc View Quote That's Nice. I just wish Ruger would trim that revolver down. The unfluted cylinder serves no purpose, and if they could just round some of the edges off and make it a cleaner looking, trimmer revolver, it'd be a bit better. |

My LGS has a 6" pre-24 Smith in it's case...for $2k
Not a triple lock...not sure if it's post-war or not, haven't gotten a real close look at it. |

Hey, I can play now!
Life long best friend just sent me this New Vaquero to celebrate our 60th circle round the sun. (I sent him a Randall Model 1 that I knew he'd appreciate.) There's no decent .44 ammo locally, and even the "cheap" stuff ain't so cheap so I ordered a couple boxes of HSM online, and a set of dies. Looks like I'll have to learn to load a new caliber. I have a few big bore revolvers, and the .44s are my favorites. I keep a good supply of .44 Russian ammo on hand to feed them, which I like shooting even more than .44 Spl as it nearly replicates .45acp.

Picking up a no dash 696 shortly (as soon as it arrives at my FFL), but I think I may look for a 624 now too.

My other LGS has a Charter Arms Bulldog, 2" I think...new. I got tempted so I did some research online, and everything I've read said "Do not buy a new Charter Arms"
It's surprisingly light; I can see how it'd be a pretty nice carry gun...and I'd expect it to recoil a bit stout as a result as well |

My wife's Christmas present to me this year is to get my 629 Mountain Gun cut for moonclips. Will also get a fiber optic front sight, a Weigand rear sight blade and some Miculek grips Going to be putting a LOT of .44 Specials through it in IDPA. Really looking forward to it.

At first glance I thought it was an M629 because the cylinder to frame fit is that of a .44Mag. But upon looking more closely your barrel it's stamped .44Special. Unless the photography is playing tricks that looks like a .44mag cylinder in length. Either way, great piece and I look forward to hearing more about her. I rocked the Tyler T and some classic Magna's for a while on my M624-3 until I sourced a great pair of original Goncalo Alves "Combats" that fit my mits like a glove. The Magna/Tyler combo fit is pretty awesome as well. |

I own a S&W Model 629 with a 6” barrel and a Model 29 with a 4” barrel. Since 2020… Yeah, not a shocker, but I, not seeing any .44 Special RLN or FMJs on any shelves in my area. I’ve only shot .44 Magnum rounds and after about 24-30 rounds, it’s no longer fun.
Anyway, just reading about the .44 Special cartridge, it sounds like the way to go, unless you’re out in the mountains and in bear country. |

.44 special is a cool round. I've got a redhawk in 44 mag and a charter bulldog in special. The bitch is it's always been hard to find special ammo. Locally I've picked up a box here and there. Mostly at this one pawn shop and another gun shop that went out of business. You pay twice as much as 45 ACP for the same performance. 45 colt is easier to get than 44 spec and same performance.

Quoted: My first love is a model 28 that a friend built for me about 45-50 years ago.(and , yes, I still have it.) he found a 6 inch .44 special barrel in the white and very rough, but marked. I gave him a smith model 28 and he bored the cylinder to .44 spects. cleaned up the barrel, did a trigger job on it, and reblued the whole thing. we put it in a Ransom rest at the range and it shot a 1 1/2 group at 50 yards. that was the only way to get a .44 special in those days. it will be the last gun of mine that I'll sell. I pour my own bullets and I'm using a round top, flat top 6 hole Lee mold now. and I powder coat my bullets. I load for about 900-1000 FPs OR there abouts. at my age I don't shoot any thing that hurts, the trigger still breaks at about 3.5 lb.s after all these years. I have replaced the firing pin(on the hammer) once(and no, I don't dry fire much at all.) but it is the gun I use to show friends that I can still shoot a revolver, the rest of them are for playing(well, not really,) thanks Garry Dean View Quote No disparaging the poster...but I always remember Skeeter stories of finding 28's and then having this conversion done. J&G when in MT was the source of stuff at times back in the late 70's. And, then the Lew Horton Combat Specials That write in Combat Handguns that extolled the virtue of the 3.5 N frame? Sweet guns! |

I really like the 44 Special and I've had a few dedicated guns in that caliber but considering the cost of brass, it's no cheaper to choose 44 Special over 44 Mag, so that's what I've done, I can load down the 44 Mag and still get great results.

I have always read that 45acp is about ballistically equal to 44 special.
Never owned a 44 special, but I do have this old 45acp shooter......I like the way it shoots. Attached File Attached File |

The last few weeks have been good to me in regards to being the high bidder on 44Special revolvers. Today I picked up a Second Model Hand Ejector and before that I scored a 4" Model 24-3.
Even after transfer fees and buyer's premiums, I ended up getting both guns for a few hundred dollars under what they are currently going for in the wild. These revolvers join with my Lipseys Bisley Blackhawk Flattop to make up my 44 Special battery. Apparently reading a lot of Keith and Skelton can have harmful affects on your wallet. |

I have a 4” 29, specials are virtually all I put through her.

I couldn’t afford a real 44 special. But man my M69 Smith is a delight with 44 special type loads in a Mag case. Skoal can accuracy at 40 yards.

Since this appears to have turned into a picture thread....here's my twin old model Vaquero 44 magnums
Attached File My MidSouth Shooters Supply order arrived Saturday--200 pieces of Starline .44 spc brass and 800 240gr lead swc projectiles. Unfortunately, my loading equipment is packed up for a move, so I won't be able to load up any until next month. I love the look and feel of these Vaqueros, but I'd be lying if I said that I wasn't looking forward to shooting something other than .430 Mushroom Cloud loads through them. |

I almost bought a stainless charter arms bulldog .44spl
yesterday. I've always wanted one and it was $400 with 2 boxes of ammo. I'm not sure if that's a good price or not but I'm trying to pay off some stuff right now. It was hard not to get it, and it has me in a cold sweat thinking about going back for it today. Coming across this thread has me feeling like it's a sign I need to go get it. ETA: GD it was dropped to $350. ugh the pressure!! |
