While I certainly prefer the double action trigger on a Smith, a 44 is a hunting gun for me so SRH.

I have three. S&W M29 4". Ruger Super Black Hawk 7.5". Dan Wesson stainless 10" heavy/vent rib shroud.
Nothing is smoother than the M29. I've given the Ruger to my nephew. I'm thinking about giving the Dan Wesson to my oldest son. I'll keep the M29 a few more years (had it for about 36 years now). It is a sweet handgun. Every time I get it out of the safe to inspect/clean/wipe down the smoothness just amazes me. |

Is it wrong that I really REALLY dislike the looks of the classic M27, M28, M29 that have the partial under-lug and square butts? I am a big fan of S&W revolvers but I find that "Classic" Dirty Harry look one of the worst of all S&W. My M29 (my only 44 Mag revolver) is a full under-lug with a round butt. https://i.imgur.com/WW9XWZpl.jpg?1 View Quote |

629-4. 5" Classic or 4" Mountain Gun, take your pick. Can't go wrong with either.

I hate full underlugs, and square butts are the best butts for shooting. My 629-4 is a round butt, partial lug 6", and its almost perfect. A set of square butt conversion grips have gotten it pretty close.

I drove a S&W 610 with full under lug 6.5-inch barrel just like your 629 and my 29 above to B-class in USPSA. Never had an issue drawing, pointing and shooting that revolver quickly and the long sight radius made long range target easy. https://i.imgur.com/vUxCAZH.jpg Never tried to conceal carry it, but I don't bother trying to conceal carry any of my N-frames. I have better revolvers for that job. But for open carry in the woods I belt and chest carry either of them quiet comfortably. View Quote |

Would probably be a 6" 29 for me, bought a 4" last year and they are pretty cool as well.

Who did that work for you, if you don't mind me asking? It seems like Bowen is the only name that comes up for barrel swaps and radical custom work on double actions. Not that he is a bad choice by any means, but it's nice to have options, lol. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

You might have noticed, responses in these threads often read like: “I have XX, and I like it / it works well / it’s better than YY”.
So with that in mind, try to determine what your primary purpose will be, and what you like. I bought a brushed chrome Desert Eagle .44 when I turned 44. Just because I wanted one. I’ve got other guns in that caliber (revolver and single-shot), and they all work well. I mostly just use them for punching paper, and smacking steel. So go see what you want/like, and have fun with it. |

I would look for a 29-5 or -6 or a 629 -3 or -4 Those will have the full endurance package, no mim parts, and will have the firing pin mounted on the hammer. They will handle heavier loads and higher round counts than the older models. Here's a few of my 29-2's https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/264774/IMG_20190511_145609_jpg-971955.JPG View Quote |

I love single actions. I love custom ones even more. I have several 5 shot conversions on the large Ruger frame in 45 colt, 454, 475 aand 500.
I also have a 5 shot 44 mag on the smaller frame. It would be hard to part with it. I think I would take a 5 inch Redhawk not the 5.5 That half inch makes a big difference. Well to me it does. I would also consider a 3 inch Super Redhawk if they would just make the frame and barrel a little bit longer. I cant stand the look of one with the barrel hanging out past the frame |
|
I'm typically a Ruger guy when it comes to revolvers, but if I could only own one .44 Magnum revolver it'd be a Smith & Wesson Model 29 Classic. Just a beautiful gun.

Dan Wesson model 44
You can pick up a nice used one far cheaper than an S&W, and they are more accurate. |

Those are factory s&w "smooth presentation stocks" if I can find a set for under $125 I usually buy them. The really nice figured ones or rosewood will bring more money. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/264774/IMG_20190704_122750_jpg-1003893.JPGhttps://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/264774/IMG_20190704_122811_jpg-1003894.JPG @eric10mm View Quote |
