With Grab A Gun having them for about $330 for the no-safety, no mag disconnect "PRO" model, I ordered one to try out.  I really like that it's true ambi controls.

Does the version with thumb safety have a magazine disconnect?

Mine does not.  Still waiting to make it to the range.  I did pick up an Alien Gear for it.

I went with a Muddy River Tactical IWB myself.

It looks like it will work well for "normal" IWB and AIWB.

It's a little heavy, but shoots HST 124gr +P really well.

Awesome thanks for the info, thinking about trading in my sig for a ruger american compact as my girlfriend has huge difficulty with the double action pull.

Wow that does look small.  Can you show a pic of the thickness comparison between the 2?

I have 2 full size and 2 compacts, all shoot extremely well.  The only thing that I have had that bothers me is the rsa spring on the 45 slips off the end of the rod.  Not sure what to do about that!  But both compacts shoot well and the recoil is very mild with either the 45 or 9.  Great guns, I've been impressed and I have Glocks, Kimbers, and Sigs.  Ruger does indeed have something going for them here.  Especially for the money.  Strange as it may seem they are slowly becoming one of my favorite guns.

I wish Ruger and others would abandon the super short grip frame in favor of something a bit longer. Something with a 15rd capacity in 9mm.

The short frame made sense during the mag ban when 10rds was max. But now that the ban is gone and we're no longer limited why not make a pistol that's Glock 19 size?

The good thing is the American is a chassis gun and it should be a simple deal for Ruger to make a new plastic grip frame and magazine to accommodate.

Are the chassis for the compact and full-size the same?  Can you swap the full-size frame with the compact slide?

Man, Ruger really blew it with this gun.  Should've mimicked the P320/250.  Grip frames in different colors and sizes available at gun launch.  They've sat on their hands with this gun, and it has cost them.  Shameful.

I think you're right. In fact I was blown away when I found out the frame inserts would not interchange between the two different sizes. What's the point of making a chassis if you aren't going to take advantage of the modular design?
