hey guys, I'm about to acquire a mark 4 / 22/45.  I have several cans that I can use with this pistol.  My question is....am I correct in assuming that you do not use a piston with this model....just direct thread

yes direct thread, also get the cover insert for the stupid chamber loaded indicator to cover up that sound leaking hole.
