Capacity, vs. recoil, vs follow up shots all matter in a defensive handgun.
In hunting, you have all the time in the world compared to a defensive situation. If you don't get a deer because your first shot with the .357 handgun misses and you don't get a second. No one cares. Just wait to the next one.
Hell, its why some guys choose to shoot deer with TC contenders in 30-06. Because they have ample time to fuck around making one powerful hit with a less than practical firearm.
Its why people hunt deer with black powder and bows. Both perfectly capable of killing an animal in one hit, in many cases more effectively than a defensive handgun round. Its just that those weapons are not good choices at all for personal defense against possibly armed humans, since one shot kills are not the only variable.
